Chapter 8 - My Husband Knew for Three Months

Michael did not argue.

That scared me more than if he had.

Rachel stepped between us and Dana.

"I represent Claire. I do not represent Michael for any potential conflict."

Michael nodded.

"I understand."

Margaret grabbed his arm.

"You don't need another lawyer."

I stared at her.

"Please stop helping."

She looked offended.

Good.

Dana took the Sterling drive into evidence.

Police processed Robert's office.

No useful fingerprints.

Whoever broke in wore gloves.

The exterior camera had been disconnected twenty minutes before entry.

Ryan's phone stayed off.

By dawn, Michael had hired separate counsel.

He sat across from me in our kitchen while both attorneys listened.

"I knew Sterling was being used," he said.

My chest tightened.

"When?"

"Three months ago."

The exact words from the roadmap of our marriage falling apart.

"How?"

"I got a bank alert."

"What did it show?"

"A deposit."

"How much?"

"Ninety-six thousand."

"The payment from Bennett Hospitality."

"Yes."

"You saw it."

"Yes."

"And?"

"I called Ryan."

Of course.

"What did he say?"

"He said it was a temporary pass-through because Blackstone's vendor account had been frozen."

"And you accepted that."

"No."

"Then what did you do?"

"I told him to reverse it."

"Did he?"

"Partially."

"How much?"

"Twenty thousand."

"So seventy-six stayed."

Michael looked down.

"Yes."

"Then more payments came."

"Yes."

"And you said nothing to me."

"No."

Margaret whispered, "Michael was protecting the family."

I turned on her.

"From what?"

She stepped back.

"Scandal."

"There it is."

Michael said, "Claire."

"No. Let her answer."

Margaret lifted her chin.

"Robert was dead. Ryan was under pressure. The restaurants were struggling."

"Michael thought he could fix it without destroying his brother."

"And while he fixed it, Ryan used my identity."

"He didn't know."

"I didn't know," Michael said.

I looked at him.

"You knew someone was using your dormant company."

"Yes."

"You knew Ryan was moving money through it."

"Yes."

"You knew your father had accused Ryan of stealing."

"Yes."

"You knew your father told you not to give Ryan anything connected to me."

His eyes filled.

"Yes."

"Then what exactly didn't you know?"

He looked like I had hit him.

I felt nothing.

That frightened me.

My phone rang.

Dana.

"We opened the Sterling drive under warrant."

I put her on speaker.

"What's on it?"

"Copies of invoices, bank login exports, and credential files."

Michael closed his eyes.

"Credential files for what?"

"Several parties."

"Names?"

"Margaret Bennett."

Margaret gripped the counter.

"Ryan Bennett."

No surprise.

"Claire Bennett."

My stomach tightened.

"And Michael Bennett."

He stared.

Dana continued.

"There are also voice samples."

I looked at Margaret.

Amanda's fake call.

"Whose?"

"At least five family members."

Ryan had built a toolkit.

Signatures.

Passwords.

Voice.

Documents.

Not theft.

Identity infrastructure.

Dana said, "We believe someone used these materials to create false authorizations."

I asked, "Can you tie the drive to Ryan?"

"Not yet."

"Metadata?"

"Most stripped."

"Creation dates?"

"Several."

"Anything recent?"

"A folder modified tonight."

My pulse jumped.

"After the break-in?"

"During it."

"Someone plugged the drive into Robert's office computer."

"That's our working theory."

"What file?"

She paused.

"Box317_index.pdf."

Margaret whispered, "No."

I looked at her.

"What?"

She backed away.

"I've seen that name."

"When?"

"Robert printed something."

"How long ago?"

"Before he died."

"What did it say?"

"I don't know. He locked it away."

I pressed.

"Where?"

"His desk."

"Which Ryan emptied."

She nodded.

I turned to Michael.

"Did Ryan know about the box before last night?"

"I don't know."

Margaret answered.

"Yes."

We all looked at her.

She sat down.

"After Robert died, Ryan found a bank slip with 317 on it."

My jaw tightened.

"And you never told us."

"I didn't know what it meant."

"Did Ryan?"

"He said it was nothing."

I laughed.

"Ryan always says that right before evidence gets expensive."

Dana continued.

"Claire, one more thing."

"What?"

"The drive contains a scanned copy of the $2 million guarantee."

"Before it was submitted?"

"Yes."

"Creation date?"

"Six weeks ago."

The room went silent.

The forgery had been prepared long before the New Year's Eve dinner.

The humiliation was not spontaneous.

The refinance trap was already built.

I said, "Margaret, when did you decide not to give me the bracelet?"

She frowned.

"What does that have to do with-"

"When?"

"Who suggested it?"

Silence.

My pulse kicked.

"Who?"

"Ryan said Robert had ordered yours separately because he was planning to put you over the family. He said you needed to be reminded you weren't in charge."

Michael swore softly.

I stared at her.

"So Ryan planned the public insult."

"He didn't plan it."

"He suggested it."

"Yes."

"And you did exactly what he wanted."

Margaret looked down.

Ryan had engineered the emotional scene that would make my withdrawal of the guarantee look vindictive.

He expected me to cancel.

Then he already had a forged signed document to claim I had changed my mind earlier.

If I challenged it, the family could say I was retaliating because of the bracelet.

It was clean.

Petty family drama hiding financial fraud.

I almost admired it.

Then I remembered the account in my name.

The fake call.

The token.

I asked Dana, "What happens next?"

"We preserve everything. We locate Ryan. We interview Amanda."

Amanda, who had disappeared from Margaret's house sometime before the break-in.

I looked around.

"Where is Amanda?"

Nobody answered.

Michael called.

Voicemail.

Margaret called.

Voicemail.

Then Amanda texted me.

Not Michael.

Not Margaret.

Me.

PLEASE DON'T CALL POLICE. I KNOW WHERE RYAN WENT.

A second message.

HE THINKS YOU OPENED THE RED ENVELOPE.

My heart kicked.

I typed:

I DIDN'T.

Three dots.

Then:

THEN DON'T. ROBERT PUT A NAME IN THERE THAT RYAN IS TERRIFIED OF.

I stared.

WHO?

Amanda replied:

YOUR FATHER'S.

My breathing stopped.

Before I could answer, another message appeared.

RYAN ISN'T THE ONLY ONE WHO KNEW THOMAS PARKER.

Then the typing stopped.

I called.

No answer.

I sent:

WHERE ARE YOU?

Nothing.

Michael read over my shoulder.

His face went white.

"Claire."

"What?"

He looked toward the sealed evidence list from Box 317.

"There was a TP folder."

"I know."

"I saw Dad with your father once."

I turned.

"When?"

"Years ago."

"After they supposedly stopped working together?"

He nodded.

"Where?"

"At our house."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"I didn't know it mattered."

I laughed.

Every secret in this family had survived on that sentence.

Then my phone rang.

Amanda.

I answered.

No voice.

Only breathing.

Then Ryan shouted in the background:

"Give me the phone!"

A crash.

Amanda screamed.

May you like

The line went dead.

CUT.
