Chapter 9 - Ryan Made Me the Thief

I sent Amanda's last location to Dana before Michael could grab his keys.

"Police are going," I said.

"I'm going too."

"No."

"She's my sister-in-law."

"And Ryan is your brother."

His face tightened.

"I know exactly what you mean."

"Good."

Dana called back.

The phone had pinged near a storage complex in Costa Mesa.

Units leased under Blackstone Harbor.

Of course.

Police found Amanda twenty minutes later.

Alive.

Shaken.

Ryan gone.

She had a cut on her forehead from falling against a metal shelf.

Not from Ryan hitting her, she insisted.

I believed half of that.

Dana interviewed her.

Amanda admitted Ryan had used her voice to make the bank call.

"He told me Claire had already agreed to the loan and changed her mind to punish Margaret."

I stared.

"You believed him?"

Amanda cried.

"I wanted to."

That phrase again.

The family motto.

Believe whatever avoids conflict.

"Did you know my signature was forged?"

"No."

"Did you know Ryan used my token?"

"No."

"Did you know he used Michael's company?"

"Not until last month."

"What happened last month?"

Amanda looked at Michael.

"Ryan said Michael knew."

Michael's jaw tightened.

"I didn't."

"He showed me emails."

"What emails?"

Amanda gave Dana access to her phone.

Ryan had sent screenshots.

Michael writing:

MOVE IT THROUGH STERLING UNTIL THIS BLOWS OVER.

Michael stared.

"I never sent that."

Forensics would decide.

I didn't.

Not yet.

Dana turned to me.

"We need you to come in."

"For what?"

"The account in your name."

"You know it's forged."

"We have evidence suggesting forgery. We also have incoming funds linked to your personal tax ID."

My stomach tightened.

"Meaning?"

"Meaning somebody built enough of a paper trail that we have to treat every possibility seriously."

Rachel squeezed my arm.

"We'll go."

At the state office, investigators laid out the case against me.

Fake consulting entity.

Bank account.

Payments.

Electronic signatures.

Vendor contracts.

Two emails from an address containing my name.

One document approving a Blackstone budget.

It looked bad.

Not courtroom bad yet.

Career-destroying bad if it leaked.

I kept my hands flat on the table.

"Show me the approval timestamps."

Dana did.

One transaction dated May 18.

10:14 a.m.

I smiled.

Dana noticed.

"What?"

"I was on stage in Denver."

Rachel nodded.

"We have conference video."

I pulled it up.

There I was.

Forty-foot screen behind me.

Timestamp visible.

Speaking about forensic authentication.

The irony almost made me sick.

Dana leaned closer.

"Online approval could still be remote."

"Show the second factor."

Backup token 8841.

Again.

Ryan had used the same device.

I turned to Michael.

He looked away.

Dana said, "When exactly did you give him the token?"

"The night Dad died."

"Did he return it?"

"He said he did."

"Did you verify?"

"No."

Dana wrote something.

I said, "He kept it for eight months."

Michael whispered, "I didn't know."

"Stop."

He fell silent.

Dana handed me another statement.

"This one concerns Sterling."

Money from Sterling had passed into the fake Claire account.

Michael stiffened.

"How?"

"We don't know yet."

He looked at me.

"I swear-"

I held up my hand.

"I can't hear another swear."

Dana said, "We're also examining whether the $2 million refinancing was designed to pay off older Blackstone debt."

"It was."

She glanced at me.

"You sound certain."

"Ryan's behavior says it."

"Behavior isn't proof."

"No. Records are."

I asked for the Blackstone maturity schedule.

She couldn't show me yet.

Rachel requested discovery through counsel.

We left after four hours.

Outside, reporters waited.

Someone had leaked my name.

"Claire! Did you steal from Bennett Hospitality?"

"Mrs. Bennett, is this why your mother-in-law excluded you from the family ceremony?"

There it was.

The trap.

Public humiliation tied to financial accusation.

Exactly as Ryan had designed.

Michael put his hand behind my back.

I moved away.

Not now.

We reached the car.

My phone showed fifty-three notifications.

My firm partner.

Clients.

My mother.

Unknown numbers.

Then a voicemail from Robert's old number.

Impossible.

I played it.

Silence for four seconds.

Then Robert's recorded voice.

"Claire, if this reached you, someone opened the index."

I stopped breathing.

Michael stared.

The message continued.

"Do not trust the order of the files. I numbered them wrong on purpose."

Rachel leaned closer.

Robert said:

"Ryan will make you look like the thief. Look for the transaction he couldn't have known about."

The voicemail ended.

I called the number back.

Disconnected.

Scheduled release through some service.

Robert had built dead-man triggers.

Rachel whispered, "What transaction?"

I thought about Box 317.

Trust.

Mortgages.

Blackstone.

Vendors.

Sterling.

TP.

Then I remembered one odd payment in the vendor folder.

A tiny amount.

$317.

From Bennett Hospitality to a company called Pacific Survey & Title.

No business purpose.

I logged into the certified copies Rachel had stored.

Transaction date:

The night Robert died.

11:58 p.m.

Ryan would have been with police and family by then.

Unless scheduled.

I opened the attached memo.

PST-44.

Rachel searched county records.

Parcel 44.

An undeveloped strip behind the original Bennett restaurant.

Owner:

Thomas Parker Estate.

My breath stopped.

My father still owned land connected to the company.

Not sold.

Not transferred.

Still in his estate.

Michael whispered, "How did we never know?"

"Because nobody wanted me looking."

The $317 payment was not money.

It was a marker.

Robert pointing to Parcel 44.

We drove to the county recorder's office the next morning.

The deed chain showed my father bought the strip with Robert and Victor in 1998.

Later documents claimed Thomas transferred his interest.

But Parcel 44 had been missed.

One surviving piece.

Proof he had been an owner.

The clerk found a scanned affidavit attached to the original deed.

Signed by Robert Bennett.

One line:

THOMAS PARKER RETAINS BENEFICIAL INTEREST PENDING PARTNERSHIP RESOLUTION.

I stared.

My father had never fully surrendered.

Rachel whispered, "This could be huge."

Then my phone rang.

Dana.

"We found Ryan's SUV."

"Where?"

"Near John Wayne Airport."

"Is he there?"

"No."

"Where did he go?"

"We don't know."

A pause.

"Claire, there's something in the vehicle you need to know about."

"What?"

"Your backup token."

I closed my eyes.

Finally.

Dana continued.

"And blood."

My pulse jumped.

"Whose?"

"We're testing."

"Ryan's?"

"Unknown."

Then she said:

"There's also a printed photograph of Robert's crash scene."

My hand tightened.

On the back, Ryan had written one sentence.

I KNOW WHAT MOM MADE ME DO.

I looked at Michael.

"What did Margaret make Ryan do?"

Michael went pale.

He knew.

May you like

Again.

CUT.
