Chapter 12 - The Woman on the Roof Wasn’t Eleanor

I laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

Because there is a point where fear becomes ridiculous.

“I know my mother-in-law.”

My father stayed calm.

“Do you know the scar behind her left ear?”

I stopped.

Eleanor had a thin white surgical scar she never covered at home.

I had seen it a hundred times.

On the roof, her hair had been pinned low.

I never saw behind her ear.

Daniel grabbed the phone.

“Dad—Samuel—what are you saying?”

“The woman who pushed Claire is Evelyn Shaw.”

Rosa went white.

Daniel whispered, “No.”

I looked between them.

“Who is Evelyn?”

Rosa sat down.

“Eleanor’s sister.”

I stared.

“Eleanor has a sister?”

“Twin sister,” Daniel said.

The word landed like a cruel joke after everything else.

Eleanor and Evelyn were identical twins.

Evelyn vanished from the family twenty-two years ago after the clinical-trial scandal.

Officially, she moved to Europe.

Unofficially, Robert blamed her for falsifying consent forms and stealing settlement money.

My father said Evelyn had returned six months ago.

The same month I married Daniel.

“Why would she want me dead?”

“Because your second will exposes the original archive.”

“That hurts Eleanor too.”

“Yes.”

“Then why would you say Eleanor isn’t behind it?”

My father hesitated.

“Because Eleanor has been trying to keep Evelyn from finding you.”

I almost dropped the phone.

Daniel said, “Mom tried to protect Claire?”

“Not out of love.”

That sounded more believable.

“Out of survival. Evelyn has proof Eleanor and Robert framed her for the worst parts of the original cover-up.”

I thought of the rooftop.

The voice.

The smile.

“Correcting my son’s mistake.”

Could that have been someone else?

Rosa asked, “Where is Eleanor now?”

My father answered, “Missing.”

Daniel went rigid.

“What?”

“She disappeared from Blackthorn House ninety minutes before the rooftop attack.”

I remembered the woman vanishing before police arrived.

Maybe she had not vanished.

Maybe Evelyn had simply stopped pretending.

Daniel asked, “How do you know all this?”

My father’s silence lasted too long.

Then he said, “Because I helped Evelyn come back to Cincinnati.”

I closed my eyes.

“Why?”

“To force Eleanor to confess.”

“You used me.”

“I thought I could control it.”

“You faked your death.”

“Yes.”

“You manipulated my blood test.”

“Yes.”

“And now a woman who looks exactly like my mother-in-law tried to kill me.”

“Yes.”

I wanted to scream.

Instead I asked, “Where is Eleanor?”

My father gave an address.

An abandoned Vale clinic outside the city.

Then he said, “Claire, do not let Daniel go with you.”

Daniel stared at the phone.

Once my father hung up, I replayed the rooftop in my head and remembered the perfume. Eleanor wore something dry and expensive, almost like cedar. The woman who pushed me smelled like gardenia. I had noticed it and dismissed it because terror simplifies the world. Daniel said Evelyn always wore flowers. I asked whether he remembered her. Barely, he said. A woman who visited twice when he was a child. Eleanor had called her an old friend. Rosa muttered something in Spanish. I said Eleanor had hidden an identical twin from her own son. Daniel looked exhausted. “At this point I’m surprised she told me my birthday.” Rosa said she might have lied about that too. We all stared at her. She shrugged and said she was joking. No one laughed immediately, which made Rosa laugh first.

“Why?”

My father answered:

“Because Evelyn did not come back for Claire.”

“She came back for you.”
