Chapter 14 - Daniel Wasn’t Eleanor’s Son

Eleanor said, “Don’t.”

Evelyn laughed.

“That word has done a lot of work in this family.”

Daniel looked at his mother.

“What is she talking about?”

Eleanor said nothing.

Evelyn answered for her.

“You were born to me.”

The room went silent.

Daniel stared.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“I have pictures.”

“Of Eleanor holding you after I nearly died.”

Daniel looked at Eleanor.

She closed her eyes.

And I knew.

Evelyn had given birth to Daniel at seventeen. Robert and Eleanor, already married and unable to have children, took him and raised him as theirs.

Evelyn was sent away.

Later she returned to work for the foundation under her maiden name.

Daniel whispered, “Why?”

Eleanor’s voice cracked.

“Because our father would have destroyed her. Because Robert wanted a child. Because I thought I could give you a better life.”

Evelyn raised the gun.

“You stole my son.”

“I raised him.”

“You erased me.”

Daniel looked physically ill.

I touched his arm.

He pulled away from everyone.

Evelyn looked at me.

“Now you understand why I pushed you.”

I stared at her.

“No. I understand why you hate her. I still don’t understand why you tried to kill me and my baby.”

“Because your child activates Robert’s trust.”

“That hurts Eleanor.”

“It also protects Daniel.”

Daniel frowned.

“How?”

Evelyn’s eyes softened when she looked at him.

“Robert knew the truth about your birth. He built a succession clause. Once Claire’s child is born, Daniel becomes permanent trustee of the archive and cannot be removed by a challenge to his parentage.”

“So you tried to kill my wife to stop me from becoming trustee?”

“To stop you from inheriting Robert’s crimes.”

Daniel laughed once.

“You pushed an eight-month-pregnant woman off a roof to protect me.”

Evelyn’s face hardened.

“I have spent thirty years watching this family turn love into paperwork. I was not going to let them do it to you again.”

“You already did.”

That hurt her.

Good.

A siren sounded outside.

Evelyn looked toward the window.

Eleanor whispered, “You called someone?”

“No.”

Daniel checked his phone.

Emergency alert.

BLACKTHORN HOUSE — FIRE RESPONSE REQUESTED.

My heart stopped.

“The nursery,” I said.

Evelyn’s face changed.

“I didn’t do that.”

Eleanor looked at her.

For the first time, both sisters looked equally afraid.

Daniel said, “Then who did?”

A text appeared on my phone.

From my father.

DON’T GO BACK TO THE HOUSE.

I called immediately.

He answered.

“Dad, is Blackthorn burning?”

After Evelyn’s confession, Daniel sat on the clinic floor with his back against the wall. Neither of his mothers approached him. I did. I asked whether he wanted me to say something. No. Did he want me to leave? Also no. So I sat beside him. After a while, he said he had spent his whole life afraid he would become his father. I told him he still might. He looked offended, and I explained that he also might not. Blood did not choose for him. He laughed and accused me of having very aggressive comfort. Across the room, Eleanor and Evelyn watched us with identical faces and completely different grief. I understood then why family secrets survive. People are not only hiding shame. They are hiding the possibility that love may survive facts it was never designed to survive.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

His voice shook.

“Because Robert Vale is alive.”
