Chapter 9 - THE VISITOR

The lobby door opened.
A man walked in. Tall. Thin. Wearing a coat that was too heavy for the weather. He didn't look at me. Just walked past the desk, toward the elevator.
"Hey," I said. "You can't go up without signing in."
He stopped. Turned.
His face was familiar. Too familiar.
"You don't remember me, do you, Jack?"
I shook my head. But something was stirring. Something buried deep.
"I was the one who called it in," he said. "That night. Three years ago. I was the one who heard her screaming."
"Who are you?"
May you like
He smiled. It was a sad smile. A tired smile.
"I'm the man who lives in 7B. I'm the one who took Sophia. I'm the one you let walk away."
