Chapter 11 - The Restraining Order**

By evening, the narrative had shifted completely.
*DANIEL MERCER — LOOTING ALLEGATIONS ROCK FIRM*
*AUDIO RECORDING REVEALS EXIT PLAN*
But Daniel wasn’t surrendering.
At six-thirty, a process server arrived at my door.
Restraining order.
Filed in family court. Alleging harassment, threats, and emotional abuse.
*—She has threatened physical harm, destroyed property, and sent multiple intimidating messages…*
I scanned the paragraphs. Every claim was inverted. Every accusation was something he had done to me.
"He’s trying to discredit me before the full evidence drops," Eleanor said, reviewing the papers. "If he can get a judge to label you unstable, your testimony carries less weight."
"He listed a false address for me," I noted. "Deliberate misrepresentation on a legal filing."
"Which we can use to have it dismissed," she said. "But not before it makes news."
I was already pulling up the court portal.
"File an immediate objection. Attach proof of current residence, timestamped communications showing his threats, and the arson witness statement."
"Done," Eleanor said. "But the media will pick this up before the clerk processes it."
"Let them. When the dismissal notice hits, it hits harder."
My phone buzzed. Not Daniel. Not an unknown number.
Vanessa.
*—I need to see you. Privately. Tonight.*
I showed Eleanor.
"Don’t go," she said instantly. "Trap. Ambush. Anything."
"If she’s willing to meet, she’s desperate," I said. "And desperate people talk."
"Send me the location. Live share your location the whole time. If you don’t check in every fifteen minutes, I’m calling the police."
"Understood."
I replied to Vanessa.
*Where?*
*The café on Water Street. Back booth. No one else.*
*I’m coming alone.*
I arrived at nine. The café was nearly empty—soft lights, quiet music, only a few tables occupied.
Vanessa sat in the rear booth. She looked drawn. Her composure was cracking.
I sat across from her.
"You came," she said quietly.
"You asked."
She twisted a napkin between her fingers. Her nails were chipped.
"He filed that order," she said. "He made me sign it. Said if I didn’t, he’d name me in everything. Said I’d go down with him."
I waited.
"He sent those fake texts too," she went on. "Made me do it. Said it was the only way to balance the story. To make you look like the aggressor."
"Why are you telling me this now?"
She looked up. Her eyes were shiny.
"Because he’s going to ruin me. I know that now. He doesn’t care about me. Never did. I was just… convenient."
"What do you want, Vanessa?"
She took a breath.
"I’ll testify. Against him. Everything. The apartment, the transfers, the texts… the farm."
My spine straightened.
"The farm?"
May you like
She nodded slowly.
"He didn’t mean to burn it all the way down. Just scare you. Make you back off. But it got out of hand. He was there, Claire. That night. He drove out there himself."
