Chapter 12 - The Immunity Deal**

I kept my voice steady.

"Tell me everything."

Vanessa leaned forward, voice low.

"He planned it two days before the gala. Said you wouldn’t fold with money or lawyers—you cared too much about that place. If he hit the farm, you’d leave quietly."

She paused, swallowing hard.

"He bought the accelerant online. Used a work alias. Picked it up after hours. Drove out just after midnight. He said he only meant to start a small fire at the edge of the barn—scare you, show you he could reach you anywhere."

"But it spread."

"Fast. Too fast. The wind shifted. He panicked and left. Didn’t wait to see."

I gripped the edge of the table.

"And the footage?"

"He had someone wipe it. A contact. Paid cash. Said it was never there."

I pulled out my phone, recording steadily.

"Who is the contact?"

"I don’t know a name. Only that he’s connected to the company. Someone Daniel has worked with before."

"Robert Lang?"

She hesitated.

"Lang’s name came up. But I don’t know for sure. Daniel said Lang would cover the trail if things got tight."

I sent a quick message to Eleanor: Witness statement secured. Begin immunity filing now.

Vanessa kept talking, faster now.

"He said you’d never press charges. Too proud. Too concerned about your family name. That you’d settle to keep it quiet."

"He was wrong."

"I know. I see that now." She met my eyes. "I have copies. Emails, messages, receipts. Everything. I kept them. Just in case."

"Handing them over won’t keep you out of trouble entirely," I said.

"I know. I want immunity. And severance. Enough to start over somewhere else."

Eleanor replied: Draft ready. Meet you at your car.

I stood.

"Come with me. We’ll get it in writing."

The night air was cool as we walked out. Eleanor was waiting by the car, documents in hand.

Vanessa signed fast, her hand shaking.

"Where are you staying?" Eleanor asked.

"A hotel downtown. He doesn’t know which one."

"We’ll move you tonight," I said. "For your own safety."

Vanessa nodded, looking relieved.

I got into my car. Eleanor stayed with Vanessa to arrange transport. My phone rang—unknown number again.

I answered.

"You think she’ll save you?" Daniel’s voice was low and rough. "She’ll say anything to protect herself. You can’t trust her."

"I don’t have to trust her. I only need the truth."

"The truth?" He laughed, sharp and bitter. "The truth is you’re nothing without that name and that money. You think anyone would care about you otherwise?"

"I care about what’s real."

"There is nothing real!" He raised his voice. "Everything was a lie! You were a joke I had to endure!"

"I’m ending this, Daniel. Tonight."

I ended the call.
