Chapter 14 - Claire's Secret

Ethan did not accuse her.

That made it worse.

He simply held out the phone.

Claire stared at the old photograph.

She had known this moment might come someday.

She had never imagined it would arrive in a hospital hallway while his newly discovered daughter slept twenty feet away.

"I can explain," she said.

Ethan's mouth tightened.

"Please do."

Claire took a breath.

"Two years ago, after we started trying to have a baby, I went for testing. Alone."

"Why alone?"

"Because you were dealing with your father's funeral and the company. I didn't want to add pressure."

"What did they say?"

Her eyes filled.

"That pregnancy would be difficult for me. Not impossible. Just... difficult."

Ethan's anger softened immediately.

"Claire."

"I was ashamed."

"Why?"

"Because everyone in your family talks about heirs like they're quarterly earnings. I thought if I told you—"

"You thought I'd leave?"

She looked away.

He stepped closer.

"I married you. Not your medical chart."

Claire laughed through tears.

"I know that now."

"Who took the photo?"

That was the real question.

Claire wiped her face.

"I don't know."

A second text arrived.

ASK HER ABOUT THE EMBRYOS.

Ethan looked at Claire.

"What embryos?"

Claire went cold.

"There aren't any."

"Claire."

"I swear. We never did IVF. We never created embryos."

She grabbed the phone and zoomed in on the clinic sign in the photograph.

Then she saw it.

The clinic name was wrong.

She had gone to Brookline Women's Health.

The photo showed Merritt Reproductive Institute.

"That's not where I went."

Ethan frowned.

"So the photo is fake?"

"Or someone edited the sign."

Ruth appeared in the doorway.

"Emma's awake."

Claire showed her the messages.

Ruth read them and went pale.

"Merritt."

"You know it?" Ethan asked.

"Mara used that clinic."

The hallway seemed to tilt.

"For what?"

"After Emma was born, Richard tried to prove she wasn't yours. He arranged private testing through Merritt."

Ethan stared.

"And?"

Ruth swallowed.

"The first result said you were the father. The second result said you weren't."

Claire whispered, "Two different results?"

Ruth nodded.

"Mara believed the second test was forged. She was trying to prove it when she died."

Emma appeared behind Ruth holding a blanket.

She looked at Ethan.

"Are you really my dad?"

No one moved.

Then Ethan knelt.

"I don't know what a piece of paper says yet. But I know I'm not leaving."

Emma stared at him for a long second.

Then she stepped into his arms.

Over Ethan's shoulder, Claire saw a man at the far end of the corridor.

Dark cap.

Daniel.

He smiled at her.

May you like

Then pressed the elevator button.
