Chapter 18 - The Child Who Came Back

They found Daniel at Blackwood Cemetery just before sunset.

Mara Ellis's grave sat beneath an old maple tree near the back fence.

Daniel stood in front of it with one arm in a sling.

He did not run when Ethan approached.

Claire stayed a few steps behind.

"Did you kill her?" Ethan asked.

Daniel stared at the headstone.

"No."

"Mercer says you did."

"Mercer says whatever keeps him breathing."

"Where were you that night?"

Daniel looked at him.

"In the car behind Mara."

Ethan took one step forward.

Daniel raised his good hand.

"Listen. Richard told me she was stealing documents. He offered me a place in the company if I brought them back. I followed her. Mercer sent another driver. That car tried to force her off the road. I tried to get between them."

His voice broke.

"I failed."

Claire watched him carefully.

"Why didn't you tell police?"

"Because Richard finally called me his son that night."

Daniel gave a bitter smile.

"You'd be amazed what one word can buy from a kid who spent his whole life waiting to hear it."

Ethan's anger did not disappear.

But something in his face shifted.

"You still cut Claire's rope."

"I know."

"You still helped Mercer."

"I know."

"Then you answer for that."

Daniel nodded.

"I came here before I turn myself in."

He placed a small envelope on Mara's grave.

"There's one more thing."

Inside was a photograph of Mara holding baby Emma beside Evelyn.

On the back, Mara had written:

If Ethan ever finds her, tell him I never stopped trying.

Ethan sat down beside the grave.

For the first time, he cried without trying to hide it.

Claire sat beside him.

Daniel walked away toward the waiting police car.

Three months later, Blackwood Cottage was being rebuilt.

Not as a hiding place.

As a home for Ruth and Emma, close enough for Emma to choose how quickly she wanted Ethan in her life.

Vanessa pleaded guilty to assault, obstruction, and conspiracy charges. She gave prosecutors everything she knew about Mercer and Richard's network.

Mercer was denied bail.

Daniel accepted a plea agreement and agreed to testify.

The hydro transfer was canceled.

Claire used her trust vote to place the disputed river land into permanent conservation under Emma's name.

On the first warm day of spring, Claire returned to the waterfall.

Ethan came with her.

So did Emma.

The little girl stood beside the same wet stone trail where Claire had nearly died.

"I was scared you wouldn't remember me," Emma said.

Claire knelt carefully.

"You saved my life. I'm not forgetting you."

Emma smiled.

Then she looked at Ethan.

"Can I ask you something?"

"Anything."

"Do I have to call you Dad?"

Ethan's eyes filled, but he smiled.

"No. You can call me Ethan until you're ready. Or forever. You decide."

Emma thought about it.

Then she took his hand.

"Okay... Dad."

Ethan closed his eyes.

Claire looked away to give him one private second.

That was when she noticed something caught between the rocks.

A waterproof envelope.

Her name was written on it.

CLAIRE BENNETT.

She opened it.

Inside was a recent photograph of the three of them at the hospital.

Taken through a window.

On the back, someone had written one line:

RICHARD WASN'T THE ONLY ONE WATCHING EMMA.

Claire slowly lifted her eyes toward the woods.

A branch moved.

And somewhere beyond the trees, a car door slammed.
