Chapter 11 - Twelve Days

Margaret sat alone in Daniel’s kitchen.
No lawyers.
No security.
The authorization sheet lay in front of her.
Her initials.
Her old access code.
Her signature.
“I didn’t order it.”
Daniel stared.
“Convince me.”
She looked at David.
“Your grandfather made us share credentials.”
“Forty years ago.”
“Yes.”
“And you never changed them?”
“I did.”
David pointed at the code.
“This one is newer.”
Margaret’s face tightened.
“Then someone copied it.”
Daniel said, “Who had access?”
“Sloan.”
“Anyone else?”
She looked at Emily.
Then Marcus.
“No.”
David sat across from her.
“Mom.”
She closed her eyes.
“Charles.”
“Stop using him for everything.”
Margaret’s eyes snapped open.
“You think I don’t know what he is?”
“I think you spent decades obeying him.”
Her hand hit the table.
“I sent you away because I would not.”
David froze.
That was the first time she sounded like his mother.
Not a trustee.
Not a liar.
A mother.
She reached into her purse.
An old key.
“Your grandmother Ruth left this.”
Daniel stared.
“She’s dead.”
“Yes.”
“Another dead woman with a key.”
Margaret ignored him.
“Safe-deposit box.”
Inside the bank vault, they found original trust amendments.
One handwritten note from Ruth.
CHARLES MUST NEVER CONTROL BOTH BOYS.
Daniel looked at David.
So the threat went back another generation.
The trust contained a clause they had missed.
If Marcus died before eighteen and Emily inherited, control would be held by Emily’s guardian until twenty-five.
Daniel.
Charles could not control Daniel easily.
Unless Daniel was declared unfit.
The fake messages.
The prom scandal.
The pressure.
Daniel whispered, “They’re not only framing Emily.”
David looked at him.
“They’re building a case against you.”
Daniel opened another packet.
Draft psychiatric petition.
Claims of instability after learning of David.
Family conflict.
Violent fixation.
Request for temporary trust oversight.
Proposed overseer:
RICHARD SLOAN.
Daniel’s jaw clenched.
Marcus looked at the page.
“He’s the bridge.”
David nodded.
“Sloan keeps appearing between Charles and every document.”
Emily said, “Then find him.”
They traced an old billing card.
Motel outside Albany.
Sloan was there.
Alive.
Terrified.
He opened the door and collapsed against Daniel.
“I didn’t shoot at you.”
“Who did?”
“I don’t know.”
“Who ordered Marcus’s car rigged?”
Sloan shook his head.
“I signed maintenance authorization. I thought it was tracking.”
“Who gave the order?”
Sloan looked past Daniel.
At David.
Then Margaret.
“No.”
Daniel grabbed his collar.
“Who?”
Sloan whispered:
“David.”
Marcus went still.
David stared.
“That’s a lie.”
Sloan looked at him.
“No.”
Then he pulled out a printed email.
From an encrypted address.
Signed:
D. CARTER.
Subject:
MARCUS VEHICLE - ACTIVATE BEFORE 18.

Marcus slowly turned toward David.
CUT.
