Chapter 2 - Rachel's Warning

Daniel drove.

Marcus sat beside him.

Emily refused to stay behind.

She sat in the back, silent, prom dress hidden beneath Daniel’s old coat.

Rachel opened the door before they knocked.

Her face went white when she saw Daniel.

Then Marcus.

Then Emily.

“Mom.”

Rachel stepped back.

“You brought her.”

Emily lifted her chin.

“I’m already in this.”

Rachel looked at Daniel.

“You should have kept them home.”

“You told Marcus to ask me about David.”

Rachel closed the door.

“Inside.”

The house smelled like coffee and cedar cleaner.

Marcus stood in the kitchen.

“Is he my father?”

Rachel froze.

“Daniel?”

“Yes.”

“No.”

The answer came fast.

Emily gripped the back of a chair.

Marcus let out one breath.

Daniel did not.

“Then why did you stop the DNA test?”

Rachel looked at him.

“Because you still don’t know about David.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“My brother died when we were six.”

Rachel closed her eyes.

“No.”

The word hit harder than a shout.

Daniel stepped toward her.

“Don’t.”

“He didn’t die.”

“I watched them lower the coffin.”

“It was empty.”

Emily whispered, “What?”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

Rachel walked to a drawer.

She took out an envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

A man standing beside her seventeen years earlier.

Daniel stared.

Same height.

Same face.

Same crooked smile.

But the scar sat on the opposite side.

The mirror twin.

David.

Alive.

Marcus touched the photo.

“That’s the same ring.”

Daniel looked.

Black signet ring.

Carter crest.

David’s.

Rachel’s hand trembled.

“I met him after you left for Boston.”

“You knew who he was?”

“Not at first.”

Daniel’s face tightened.

“What does that mean?”

Rachel looked at the floor.

“He let me believe he was you.”

Emily made a small sound.

Marcus stepped back.

Rachel continued.

“Only for a few days. Then he told me.”

“You stayed with him.”

“For a while.”

“And Marcus?”

Rachel’s eyes moved to her son.

“I was already pregnant when David disappeared.”

Marcus swallowed.

“You told me Dad died.”

“I thought he had.”

Daniel grabbed the edge of the counter.

“How did he disappear?”

“He said the Carter family had found him.”

“Who?”

“Your mother.”

Daniel stared.

Rachel’s face changed.

“She paid me to leave.”

Emily whispered, “Grandma?”

Rachel nodded.

“Margaret knew David was alive.”

Daniel backed into the table.

“No.”

“She knew about Marcus too.”

Marcus’s voice hardened.

“How much did she pay you?”

“I stopped taking it after the first year.”

“You took it.”

“To keep you safe.”

Marcus laughed once.

“Everyone says that right before the lie.”

Daniel looked at Rachel.

“What did David say before he left?”

“That the family trust would make people dangerous.”

“What trust?”

Rachel opened another envelope.

Inside was a birth-record copy and a note in David’s handwriting.

DANIEL MUST NEVER KNOW UNTIL MARCUS IS SAFE.

Daniel read it twice.

His pulse hammered.

“Why me?”

Rachel answered.

“Because David believed if you knew, you would go after the person who erased him.”

Daniel looked up.

“Who erased him?”

Rachel’s eyes shifted toward the window.

Headlights stopped outside.

A dark sedan.

No plates visible.

Her face went white.

“Turn off the lights.”

Marcus whispered, “Mom?”

Rachel grabbed his arm.

“They found us.”

Daniel moved to the curtain.

The sedan door opened.

A man stepped out.

Rachel stared.

“That’s not possible.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Who is he?”

Rachel whispered:

“Richard Sloan.”

Daniel knew the name.

The Carter family attorney.
