Chapter 1 - The Heir They Didn't Expect

Victoria said one name.

“Adrian.”

I stared at her.

“Who is Adrian?”

Her fingers tightened around the stem of her champagne glass.

“My son.”

The room had barely recovered from Mr. Bell telling everyone that Rafael had left me the largest individual share of Montenegro Holdings.

Now Victoria looked afraid of her own child.

Claudia pushed back from the table.

“Grandma, stop.”

Victoria ignored her.

Mr. Bell’s phone vibrated.

He checked the screen.

His expression changed.

“What?”

He did not answer me immediately.

That was enough to make my stomach tighten.

He opened an email.

Then another attachment.

“An emergency petition has been filed against the estate.”

Claudia folded her arms.

“Good.”

Mr. Bell looked at her.

“You may want to wait until you hear what it says.”

Victoria closed her eyes.

I said, “What petition?”

He rotated the screen toward me.

The first line hit me like cold water.

PETITION TO SUSPEND DISTRIBUTION AND INVESTIGATE FRAUDULENT CLAIM OF DESCENT.

My name sat underneath.

Lucia Alvarez.

I laughed once.

It came out dry.

“I learned about this twenty minutes ago.”

Mr. Bell nodded.

“The filing claims you deliberately entered the Montenegro household under false pretenses to position yourself near Rafael.”

“What?”

Claudia stared at me.

“I knew it.”

I turned on her.

“You watched me polish glasses for eight months.”

“That does not mean you were innocent.”

Mr. Bell kept reading.

The petition contained my employment application.

My college schedule.

My lease.

My mother’s death certificate.

Even the photo from the cracked serving dish incident.

My palm went cold.

“How did they get this?”

Victoria whispered, “Adrian.”

Mr. Bell opened the filing metadata.

Then went still.

“What?”

He zoomed in.

Created six weeks earlier.

I looked at him.

“Rafael died four months ago.”

“Yes.”

“Then somebody prepared this before the DNA report.”

“Yes.”

Claudia looked at Victoria.

“Dad would not do that.”

Victoria laughed without humor.

“You do not know your father.”

“That is my father you’re talking about.”

“And Rafael was my brother.”

The dining room doors opened.

A man stepped inside.

Tall.

Silver at his temples.

Navy suit.

No hurry in his stride.

He looked around the room and stopped on me.

Not confused.

Not surprised.

He knew exactly who I was.

“Lucia Alvarez.”

My spine tightened.

Mr. Bell stepped between us.

“Adrian.”

Adrian smiled.

“Bell.”

He kissed Victoria’s cheek.

She did not return it.

Then he looked at the DNA report.

“So it’s true.”

I said, “You prepared a petition against me six weeks ago.”

He did not blink.

“Corporate counsel prepared contingencies.”

“Before anyone told me I was related to your family?”

“You were already inside this house.”

I stared.

“So were thirty employees.”

“Yes.”

“But you investigated me.”

He adjusted one cuff.

“I protect this company.”

“From waitresses?”

Claudia flinched.

Adrian smiled.

“From surprises.”

Mr. Bell said, “How did you know there might be one?”

Adrian’s smile disappeared.

For half a second.

Then returned.

“Rafael talked.”

Mr. Bell looked at him carefully.

“About whom?”

“Isabel.”

My pulse jumped.

“And Elena,” Adrian added.

I stopped breathing.

My mother’s name.

No one in that room had said it in Adrian’s presence.

Not once.

I stepped closer.

“How do you know my mother’s name?”

Adrian’s eyes met mine.

“Rafael mentioned her.”

Mr. Bell’s face hardened.

“What?”

Adrian looked at him.

“You heard me.”

Bell reached into his leather folder.

He pulled out a sealed instruction sheet.

Broke the tape.

Read.

Then looked at Adrian.

“Rafael specifically instructed me not to discuss Elena Alvarez with you.”

Silence.

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

Claudia whispered, “Dad?”

I looked at him.

“How did you know her name?”

His phone vibrated.

He checked it.

Then smiled.

“Ask Rafael.”

“He’s dead.”

Adrian slipped the phone into his pocket.

“Yes.”

His eyes stayed on me.

“And that is exactly why this is going to become complicated.”
