Chapter 12 - The Wrong Man

Evelyn did not deny it.

She sat in the conservatory beneath winter light.

Her cane rested across her knees.

“I told her the baby died.”

My hands curled.

“Why?”

“Our father found out where she was.”

“And?”

“He threatened to take the child.”

“The child had already been adopted.”

“He could still destroy the family.”

“So you lied.”

“Yes.”

“To Isabel.”

“Yes.”

“You told a mother her daughter was dead.”

Evelyn’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

My throat burned.

“And Elena?”

“She was safe.”

“She spent fifty-two years thinking she came from nowhere.”

Evelyn flinched.

“I know.”

“No. You know now.”

She looked down.

I wanted to hate her cleanly.

It would have been easier.

Instead she told me the rest.

Their father had connections.

Judges.

Attorneys.

A private institution.

He threatened to have Isabel declared unstable.

Take the baby.

Control everything.

Evelyn chose adoption.

Then falsified Isabel’s death to stop the search.

She carved 317 into the pendant.

She gave Isabel enough information to retrieve the documents one day.

But then fear did what fear always did in that family.

It became habit.

Silence became policy.

Years became decades.

“Why did Rafael say you erased her?”

“Because I did.”

Simple.

No excuse.

“What happened when he found her?”

“Too late.”

Isabel was dying.

Cancer.

Different name.

Different state.

Rafael met her once.

She asked about Elena.

He could not tell her the truth.

I stared.

“What?”

Evelyn cried.

“He did.”

“You said he could not.”

“He tried. She died before he returned with the adoption records.”

My chest hurt.

One day.

One trip.

One delay.

An entire life missed by inches.

Bell entered quickly.

“Lucia.”

His face tightened.

“What?”

“Adrian is gone.”

“Gone where?”

“Private jet filed for Montreal. Then canceled.”

“Accounts?”

“Frozen.”

“Claudia?”

“Safe.”

“Then why do you look like that?”

He held up his phone.

Security alert.

Montenegro archive server.

Someone had accessed Rafael’s dead-man files.

From inside the estate.

Evelyn looked toward the hallway.

Victoria?

No.

She entered a second later.

Breathless.

“It’s Claudia.”

I froze.

“What?”

Victoria held out a note.

Claudia’s handwriting.

DAD CALLED.

HE SAYS HE HAS PROOF LUCIA KILLED RAFAEL.

I’M GOING TO MAKE HIM GIVE IT TO ME.

My stomach dropped.

Location ping.

Old greenhouse property.

I ran.

May you like

CUT.
