Chapter 12 - The Frame

Caleb shoved the archival box under Kell's desk.
Rachel folded Theodore's letter once and pushed it inside her coat.
The handle rattled again.
"Mr. Kell," the man called. "This is concerning privileged material belonging to the Mercer Trust."
Kell looked at Ethan. "Did you bring trust counsel?"
"No."
Ethan moved beside the door but didn't open it.
"Who are you?"
A pause.
"Gerald Pike. Mercer Foundation legal."
Caleb mouthed Vivian.
Ethan's jaw tightened.
"Come back with a court order."
"Mr. Mercer, removing trust documents may expose you to liability."
Rachel pulled out her phone and started recording.
"Interesting," she said loudly. "How did foundation legal know we were here?"
Silence.
Then footsteps moved away.
Caleb checked the stairwell window.
A dark sedan pulled from the curb.
"They're tracking us."
Ethan looked at the letter in Rachel's hand. "Then we copy everything now."
Kell scanned Theodore's three pages, the trust draft, and the appointment notes. He placed digital copies on two separate drives and emailed one to a new account Rachel created on the spot.
By the time they left, Rachel's phone had thirty-two percent battery and six missed calls.
Two were from her sister.
Four were from police.
Rachel called the detective back from the car.
"Mrs. Mercer, we need you to come to the station."
"Why?"
"There has been a complaint from North Valley Women's Health regarding stolen confidential medical files."
Rachel's hand tightened around the phone.
"I didn't steal anything."
"We need to discuss materials recovered from your vehicle."
She looked at Ethan.
"What materials?"
"Please come in voluntarily."
They drove straight home first.
A patrol car waited at the curb.
Rachel's repaired car sat in the driveway.
A detective stood beside it holding a clear evidence bag.
Inside were patient files bearing Brighton's old logo.
Rachel stopped walking.
"Those are not mine."
The detective's expression didn't change. "They were found under your rear seat during follow-up processing of the vandalism report."
"Someone broke my window and planted them."
"That's one possibility."
"It's the obvious possibility."
Ethan stepped beside her. "She reported the break-in herself. Why would she leave stolen files in the car she asked police to process?"
"Mr. Mercer, we'll sort through the timeline."
Rachel looked at the top file through the plastic.
One name was visible.
Not hers.
A stranger.
A date from seven years ago.
"How many?"
"Twelve patient files."
Rachel's skin prickled.
Eleven other cases plus hers.
The thought appeared and vanished before she could hold it.
The detective continued. "The clinic also reports unauthorized access to archived billing data from an IP address associated with your home."
Rachel turned sharply. "What?"
Ethan swore under his breath.
"We used their patient portal," Rachel said. "We did not hack anything."
"We need your devices for analysis."
"No."
The detective's face hardened slightly. "You can provide them voluntarily or we can seek a warrant."
Rachel looked toward the house.
Noah wasn't there.
Good.
Her sister still had him.
She thought of the mystery USB.
The scans it contained.
The clinic could claim those were stolen too.
"I want a lawyer."
"That's your right."
A black Mercedes stopped across the street.
Vivian got out.
Rachel felt Ethan stiffen beside her.
Vivian approached slowly, eyes moving from the patrol car to the evidence bag.
"What happened?"
Rachel laughed.
"You tell me."
Vivian looked wounded with almost perfect timing.
"Rachel, whatever you think I've done, stealing patient files will only make this worse."
The detective glanced between them.
Rachel's hands went cold.
"You knew what they found before anyone told you."
Vivian's eyes flickered.
Ethan saw it.
"Mom."
"Gerald called me."
"Gerald was at Kell's office."
"Because trust documents were being removed."
Rachel stepped closer. "And did Gerald put medical files in my car too?"
Vivian's lips pressed together.
The detective separated them before Rachel could move closer.
"Mrs. Mercer, station. Now."
Two hours later Rachel sat in an interview room with an attorney Kell had recommended.
The detective placed one of the seized Brighton documents on the table in a protective sleeve.
"We found your fingerprints on the outer folder."
Rachel stared at it.
"That's impossible."
"Have you seen it before?"
She leaned closer.
The cover carried a handwritten note in blue ink.
AUTHORIZATION RECIEVED - HOLD FOR PRIVATE TRANSFER.
Rachel blinked.
Recieved.
I before e.
Wrong.
She had seen that exact misspelling for years.
Vivian wrote it every Christmas on gift cards when she meant received.
PACKAGE RECIEVED.
INVITATION RECIEVED.
Rachel sat back.
"I know who wrote that."
The detective started to speak.
The interview room door opened.
Ethan walked in with his own attorney behind him.
"If you're investigating Rachel," he said, "you need to investigate my mother too."
The detective looked up.
Ethan put Theodore's letter on the table.
At that exact moment, Vivian's phone buzzed in the hallway beyond the half-open door.
Rachel could see her standing beside Gerald Pike.
Vivian glanced at the screen.
A message preview flashed large enough to read.
MARA ELLIS: I HAVE THE ORIGINAL RECORDING.
Vivian's face changed.
May you like
Then she turned and ran for the exit.
