Chapter 5 - The Man at the Door

Ethan shoved the door closed behind Caleb.

"Get out."

Caleb didn't move.

Rainwater ran from his coat onto Vivian's marble floor. He looked thinner than Rachel remembered, beard rougher, hair cut close at the sides.

"I drove six hours," Caleb said. "I'm not leaving until you hear me."

Ethan stepped into his space. "You haven't spoken to me in four years. You show up the night my marriage falls apart and tell me you want to talk about my son?"

Caleb's eyes shifted to Rachel.

"He's the reason I contacted you."

Ethan's hand closed around Caleb's coat.

Rachel moved before she thought. "Ethan."

"You sent the messages?"

Caleb looked at his brother's fist gripping fabric. "Some of them."

Ethan slammed him back against the door.

Vivian gasped. "Stop it."

Caleb didn't raise his hands. "If you hit me before you read what I brought, you'll hate yourself later."

Ethan released him with a shove.

"Five seconds."

Caleb reached inside his coat.

Ethan tensed.

Caleb pulled out a plastic document sleeve.

Inside were two laboratory reports.

He set them on the foyer table.

"Six months ago I did one of those ancestry kits."

Ethan stared at him. "Why?"

"Because I wanted to know whether Dad's family history explained a heart issue. I forgot about it until I got a match notification."

Rachel's fingers curled against her palms.

Caleb continued. "The account belonged to a minor. No public name. Just initials. N.M."

Ethan's face emptied.

"I thought it was a cousin's kid. Then the predicted relationship came back too close."

He slid the first report forward.

Rachel saw the words PARENT/CHILD PROBABILITY before Ethan blocked her view.

Ethan read it.

His throat moved.

"No."

"I thought the same thing."

"You slept with her."

Caleb's head snapped back. "What?"

Ethan pointed at Rachel without looking away from his brother. "You slept with my wife."

"No."

"Don't lie to me."

"I've never touched Rachel."

Ethan grabbed the report and threw it across the foyer.

Pages slid over the floor.

"The lab says you're Noah's father!"

Caleb crouched, gathered the papers, and stood again. "That's why I tested twice."

He held up the second report.

Different laboratory.

Same conclusion.

Rachel backed into the wall.

Her brain rejected the words even as her eyes kept finding them.

Biological father.

Caleb.

"That's impossible," she said.

Vivian's voice came from behind them. "Yes. It is."

Rachel turned.

Vivian had gone pale.

Caleb saw her expression.

"There," he said quietly. "That's why I'm here."

Ethan looked at his mother. "What does that mean?"

Vivian recovered quickly. "It means these commercial DNA companies make mistakes."

Caleb laughed once. "Two independent legal labs?"

"Samples get contaminated."

"Both times?"

"You don't know what you've done bringing this into their home."

Caleb stepped toward her. "I know exactly what I did. I gave Ethan information you buried."

Ethan's eyes sharpened. "You know about Brighton?"

Caleb looked at him.

Too long.

Ethan saw it.

"You do."

Caleb took a breath. "After the ancestry result, I started pulling old records."

"What records?"

"My own."

"Why would your records have anything to do with Brighton?"

Caleb's jaw flexed.

Vivian said, "This is enough."

He ignored her.

"When I was twenty-five, before I took that contract in Afghanistan, I had reproductive material frozen. The company required medical planning because the work was high-risk and remote."

Rachel's mouth went dry.

"Where?"

Caleb looked at her. "A storage facility called Northstar Cryogenic Services."

Rachel had never heard of it.

Then Caleb added, "Brighton Fertility used the same parent medical network."

Ethan pressed both hands to his head.

"No. No, no. This is insane."

Caleb pulled his phone from his pocket and opened an email.

"I asked Northstar for an audit. My sample was logged out once. Six years ago."

Rachel stepped forward. "When?"

He turned the screen.

April 14.

The date of her procedure.

Rachel felt the floor tilt.

"Who checked it out?"

"That's what I'm trying to find out. The authorization scan is missing."

Vivian moved toward the papers. "You need to stop making accusations based on incomplete records."

Caleb blocked her hand.

"I didn't accuse anyone."

"You broke into this family after years of silence."

"I didn't break into anything."

Rachel watched them.

Years of silence.

Four years since the brothers had spoken.

A fight no one ever explained clearly.

Caleb looked at Vivian and lowered his voice. "You knew Ethan couldn't have children."

Vivian's nostrils flared.

Ethan turned to her. "Answer him."

She stayed silent.

Caleb reached into the sleeve and removed one final page.

"There's something else."

Ethan laughed, but no humor came with it. "Of course there is."

Caleb placed the page on the table.

"This is the chain-of-custody profile from the second lab. Mine. Noah's."

Rachel saw rows of markers and probabilities she couldn't interpret.

At the bottom, the conclusion was plain English.

Probability of paternity: greater than 99.99%.

Ethan didn't touch the paper.

He looked at Caleb.

His voice broke on the first word. "Did you sleep with my wife?"

Caleb held his gaze.

"No."

"Did you ever meet her alone?"

"No."

"Did you ever see her during the month Noah was conceived?"

Caleb's eyes didn't move.

"I wasn't even in the country."

Rachel remembered the dates before he said them.

Caleb had been overseas for almost a year.

Ethan did too.

His face changed.

Caleb tapped the report.

"I've never touched Rachel. I've never had an affair with her. But the tests aren't wrong."

He looked at the family photo visible down the hall.

Then back at Ethan.

May you like

"Noah is my biological son."
