Chapter 12 - The Dead Man at St. Michael's

Henry Bell opened the door holding a shotgun.
Tomas stepped out of the SUV first.
The weapon lowered.
Neither man spoke.
Twelve years separated them.
A funeral.
A lie.
A lifetime.
Then Tomas punched his father.
Henry hit the porch.
Alejandro let him.
Tomas grabbed Henry by the coat.
“You were alive.”
“Yes.”
“You let me bury you.”
“Yes.”
“You watched me work for the same family you ran from.”
Henry’s eyes filled.
“Yes.”
Tomas hit him again.
Elena stepped forward.
“Emma.”
That ended the reunion.
Henry looked at her.
“You’re Elena.”
“Where is my daughter?”
“I don’t know.”
Alejandro moved closer.
“Wrong answer.”
Henry looked at him.
“You sound like your father.”
“Don’t.”
“Good.”
Henry stood slowly.
“Then maybe you won’t make his mistakes.”
Inside the retreat, Henry told them the truth.
Alejandro’s father discovered the security leak thirteen years earlier.
He sent Henry to investigate quietly.
Henry traced it to Vincenzo.
Before he could prove it, his warehouse exploded.
Vincenzo believed Henry died.
Alejandro’s father ordered Henry to remain dead until the network could be exposed.
Then Alejandro’s father died unexpectedly six months later.
“Heart attack,” Alejandro said.
Henry looked at him.
“Maybe.”
Nobody liked that answer.
Henry stayed hidden and kept investigating.
Luca found him years later.
They worked together.
Then Luca died.
“Why didn’t you come to me?” Alejandro asked.
“Because Luca believed someone inside your security office was compromised.”
“Tomas?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
“Dominic Shaw’s predecessor.”
“He’s dead.”
“Yes.”
“Vincenzo cleaned his tracks.”
Elena slammed both palms onto the table.
“My daughter.”
Henry nodded.
“Vincenzo called me this morning.”
Everyone went still.
“He has Emma.”
“Where?”
“He wants Luca’s files.”
“We don’t have all of them.”
“He thinks I do.”
Henry opened an old cabinet.
Inside was a locked case.
He placed it on the table.
“I do.”
Alejandro stared.
“You let us spend four years believing Luca died for nothing while you sat on evidence?”
“I was waiting until I could prove the whole network.”
“My brother is dead.”
“I know.”
“My niece was kidnapped.”
“I know.”
“Then your plan failed.”
Henry flinched.
Good.
The case contained recordings, transfer records, names, and photographs.
Enough to destroy Vincenzo’s entire network.
Enough to send people to prison.
Enough to explain Luca’s death.
But Henry refused to hand it over.
“Vincenzo will kill Emma once he has this.”
“Then we give him something else,” Elena said.
Everyone looked at her.
She wiped her tears.
“For four years, men have been deciding what I should know, where I should go, what risks are acceptable for my child.”
“No more.”
Alejandro studied her.
“What are you suggesting?”
“A copy.”
Henry shook his head.
“He’ll verify it.”
“Then give him enough truth to believe the rest is real.”
Tomas slowly smiled.
“My mother always liked you,” he told Elena.
“I never met your mother.”
“She would have.”
The phone rang.
Vincenzo.
Henry answered on speaker.
“Bring the case to the old boathouse at eight.”
Emma’s voice sounded faintly in the background.
“Mama?”
Elena broke.
“I’m here, baby!”
The line went silent.
Then Vincenzo said calmly.
“Bring Elena too.”
Alejandro’s face turned cold.
“Why?”
“Because Luca died for her once.”
May you like
“I want to see if you will do the same.”
