Chapter 15 - The Last Moretti Rule

Three months later, Alejandro stood in a federal courtroom and answered questions for six hours.

His lawyers hated it.

Gabriel hated it more.

“You’re giving them too much,” his uncle said afterward.

“I’m giving them what Luca died trying to prove.”

“That includes our own operations.”

“Yes.”

Gabriel stared at him.

“You understand what this does to the family?”

Alejandro looked through the courthouse glass.

Elena was outside with Emma.

Tomas stood nearby.

Henry Bell sat alone on a bench, looking older every day.

“Yes.”

For years, the Moretti family had survived by one rule.

Protect the family first.

Alejandro finally understood how dangerous that sentence could become when nobody defined what family meant.

A business?

A name?

A criminal structure?

Or people?

He chose people.

The legitimate companies remained.

The rest began collapsing under investigations, settlements, and Alejandro’s own cooperation.

Men who had once called him weak discovered that walking away from inherited violence required more nerve than continuing it.

Vincenzo was charged with a long list of crimes tied to Luca’s death, the poisoning, kidnapping, financial fraud, and years of covert surveillance.

Dominic was cleared.

Gabriel survived the investigation, furious but innocent of the central conspiracy.

Henry Bell entered witness protection after testifying.

Tomas did not forgive his father quickly.

Henry did not ask him to.

Elena rented a small townhouse twenty minutes from the mansion.

She paid for it herself.

Alejandro respected that.

Mostly.

He sent a security system anyway.

She returned it.

He sent a less expensive one.

She returned that too.

Then Emma drew him a picture labeled STOP SENDING STUFF.

He framed it.

Every Sunday, Alejandro visited.

At first he arrived in a black SUV with two guards.

Emma complained.

“They eat all the cookies.”

The following week, he came alone.

Elena opened the door.

“You actually listened.”

“Don’t sound shocked.”

“I’m adjusting.”

Emma ran downstairs.

“Uncle Alejandro!”

She launched herself at him.

He caught her awkwardly.

He had become better at many things in three months.

Catching children was still not one of them.

Emma held up a school paper.

“I drew my family.”

Alejandro studied it.

Elena.

Emma.

Luca with wings.

Alejandro.

Tomas.

A very grumpy-looking Gabriel.

And a pink rabbit nearly as large as everyone else.

“Why is the rabbit bigger than me?”

“He saved you.”

“You saved me.”

Emma shook her head.

“We both did.”

Fair enough.

That night, after Emma went to bed, Elena handed Alejandro an envelope.

“What’s this?”

“Something I found in the lining of Luca’s old coat.”

Alejandro opened it.

One sheet of paper.

Luca’s handwriting.

Brother,

If Elena ever lets you meet my child, do one thing for me.

Do not teach them fear before you teach them love.

Our family has done that backward for generations.

Alejandro read it twice.

Then a third time.

Elena watched him.

“He knew you better than I did.”

“He knew the version of me I hadn’t become yet.”

“Maybe.”

Alejandro folded the letter carefully.

Then Emma screamed upstairs.

Both adults ran.

They found her sitting in bed, frightened but safe.

Nightmare.

Elena held her.

Alejandro remained at the door.

Emma reached out.

“Come here.”

He did.

She took his hand.

“No scary rules tonight.”

Alejandro looked at Elena.

She smiled through tears.

“No scary rules.”

So Alejandro sat beside the bed until Emma fell asleep holding one finger in each hand.

Her mother on one side.

Her uncle on the other.

May you like

And for the first time in generations, a Moretti child fell asleep without being taught to fear the house protecting her.
