Chapter 19 - The Safety Deposit Box
"Explain it to me, Cross," I demanded, the exhaustion finally catching up to my bones. "No more games. Tell me the truth."
"Your father didn't just want the money, Mark," Cross said, leaning against the ambulance fender. "Richard Miller was dying of terminal renal amyloidosis. The synthetic gene patent your mother created was a targeted therapeutic protocol designed to rewrite cellular degradation. It was the only cure in existence."
"And Toby?"
"Toby’s blood type and HLA markers were the only compatible match in the world capable of generating the viral vector without triggering total organ rejection," Cross said. "Richard didn't want the money. He wanted Toby’s bone marrow to save his own life. Elena was promised half the portfolio if she delivered the boy to Zurich before Richard's organs failed."
"And my mother?"
"Your mother found out about the plan when Richard contacted her from Switzerland last month," Cross explained. "She knew Richard would stop at nothing to get Toby. So she faked her own legal vulnerability, drew Elena into the open, and created the bio-locked counter-agent to kill Richard the moment he tried to harvest the boy."
"She let me believe she was a monster," I whispered, remembering the look on her face on the patio when she kicked the cobbler from Toby's hands. "She said 'Garbage cooks garbage.'"
"Because she knew Elena was watching through the pantry camera," Cross said, pulling a brass safe deposit key from his pocket and handing it to me. "She had to make Elena believe the plan was working. She sacrificed her own life to keep you and Toby alive long enough for us to track down the network."
I took the key. It was stamped with a number: BOX 404 - FIRST MERCHANTS BANK.
"What's in the box?"
May you like
"Everything she owned," Cross said. "Transferred entirely into your name, free and clear of any trusts, patents, or legal claims. You're a free man, Mark. And your son is safe."
