Chapter 4 - The Reverse Lights
The white reverse lights flared like twin searchlights.
She didn't tap the gas. She floored it.
The heavy German sedan surged backward straight at me.
I threw myself sideways onto the concrete, grabbing the corner of my rolling tool chest. The Mercedes’ rear bumper obliterated the metal workbench where I had been standing half a second earlier, sending sockets, wrenches, and motor oil raining down across the floor.
The tires shrieked against the slick epoxy, smoking as she jammed the shifter into drive and blasted down the driveway.
"Mark!" Elena stumbled into the garage, clutching a kitchen towel to her head. "My car! Take my car!"
Elena’s keys were hanging on the magnetic board by the kitchen door. I ripped them off the hook, charged out the side door, and jumped into her Subaru Outback.
I slammed the key into the ignition, dumped the transmission into gear, and peeled out across the wet grass, tearing up chunks of sod as I blew through the cedar hedges onto the street.
Half a mile ahead, the silver Mercedes blew through a red light at the county highway junction, broadsiding a delivery van.
Metal crumpled with a sickening crunch. The delivery van spun a full three-sixty, flipping onto its side across two lanes, while Evelyn's Mercedes ricocheted off the guardrail, sparks raining over the blacktop as she kept moving, dragging its front bumper.
I stomped the accelerator to the floorboard.
My phone buzzed violently in the cup holder.
It was an unknown number.
I hit the steering wheel speaker button. "Who is this?"
"Mark, this is Detective Cross, State Police," a rough voice barked over sirens. "Do not intercept that silver Mercedes."
"My son is dying in the front seat!" I screamed over the roar of the boxer engine. "She poisoned him!"

"Your mother isn't driving that car, Mark," Cross said, his tone dead and urgent. "Your mother's body was discovered twenty minutes ago in a storage container behind the marina. We have no idea who is in that vehicle with your son."
