Chapter 1 - The Ice Machine

---
I found my daughter's hand trapped inside the industrial ice machine at my parents' country club.
She was screaming.
Not crying. Screaming. The kind of sound that tears through your chest and rips your heart out. Her small fingers were caught between the crushing gears, blood dripping onto the stainless steel floor.
My mother-in-law stood beside her holding the power switch.
"Turn it off!"
She didn't.
Instead, she looked directly at me. Eleanor. Seventy-three years old. Pearl necklace. Silk blouse. The same woman who'd smiled at my wedding, who'd held my daughter at her christening, who'd taught me to make her son's favorite pasta.
"Ask her what she stole."
My daughter—Lily—was nine years old. Nine. Her face was contorted with pain, tears streaming down her cheeks, her little body shaking.
"Grandma, please—"
"Ask her."
I didn't ask. I lunged across the service room and killed the machine myself.
The gears stopped. Lily collapsed against me, sobbing, her fingers red and shaking. I pulled her free. Held her. Rocked her.
"I've got you. I've got you. You're safe."
"I didn't steal anything, Mom. I swear. I didn't."
"I know, baby. I know."
Then something dropped from the pocket of her cardigan.
A small black memory card.
It hit the floor with a tiny click. Rolled across the tile. Stopped at Eleanor's feet.
My mother-in-law's face changed instantly.
Not anger.
Fear.
I looked at my daughter.
"Where did you get this?"
She pointed toward the private dining room upstairs.
"Grandma dropped it."
"Grandma dropped it?"
"When she was yelling at Uncle Richard. It fell out of her purse. I picked it up to give it back, but then she saw me..."
"And when she saw me pick it up… she brought me down here."
I looked at Eleanor. At the memory card. At my daughter's bleeding hand.
That was when I stopped looking at my daughter's injured hand—
and started wondering what was on that card.
