Chapter 9 - The Trial

---

The trial lasted six months.

It was the biggest case in the state's history. Murder. Conspiracy. Money laundering. Racketeering.

The media called it "The Country Club Killings."

I testified. So did Michael. So did Hannah. So did a dozen other witnesses.

The video of Emily Morrison's death was played for the jury. Twice.

Eleanor broke down. Begged for mercy. Said she was just protecting her family.

The jury didn't buy it.

She was sentenced to life without parole. Richard got the same. The others got fifteen to thirty.

When the judge read the verdict, Eleanor looked at me.

"This is your fault," she whispered.

"No," I said. "This is yours."

EPILOGUE

Lily turned ten last month.

Her hand healed. The nerve damage was minimal. She can still play piano. Still write. Still draw.

She doesn't talk about that day anymore. The therapist says that's normal. Says she's healing.

I hope so.

Michael and I are separated. Divorced. But he sees Lily every weekend. Takes her to the park. To the movies. To dinner.

He's trying. That's all I can ask.

I opened a small bookstore in town. Quiet. Peaceful. Safe.

Sometimes I think about Emily Morrison. About what she could have been. What she could have done.

She died because she overheard something she shouldn't have. Because she was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Lily survived because she was brave. Because she picked up a memory card. Because she trusted me to save her.

I think about that every day.

And I thank God for the little black card that changed everything.
