Chapter 4 - The Card

---

I waited until Lily was asleep.

Then I pulled out my laptop. Inserted the memory card.

A folder appeared. No name. Just a blank icon.

I clicked it.

Inside were three files. A video. A document. And a folder labeled "FINANCIAL."

I opened the video first.

The footage was grainy. Security camera quality. Dated eight years ago. The country club pool. Night.

Two figures appeared. One tall. One short. A man and a girl.

The girl was Emily Morrison.

I recognized her from the news articles. Blonde hair. Thin. Scared.

The man was my father-in-law. Richard Hartley.

"Please," Emily was saying. "Please, I won't tell anyone."

"You should have thought about that before you started asking questions."

"I didn't mean to—I just—I overheard something. I didn't understand."

"But you told your friends. You told your parents."

"I won't anymore. I promise."

Richard stepped closer. Grabbed her arm.

"Promises don't mean much when you're dead."

She tried to run. He caught her. Pushed her.

Her head hit the edge of the pool. Once. Twice.

Then she stopped moving.

Richard stood there for a moment. Looking at her body. Then he pulled out his phone.

"It's done. Get the cleanup crew."

The video ended.

I sat there. Frozen. My hands shaking.

They'd killed her. Richard had killed her. And Eleanor had helped cover it up.

I opened the document next.

It was a confession. Written by Richard. Signed. Dated.

"I, Richard Hartley, admit to the accidental death of Emily Morrison. I take full responsibility. My family had no knowledge of my actions."

A lie. A cover-up. A way to protect the family if the truth ever came out.

But Eleanor had been there. She'd known. She'd helped.

I opened the financial folder.

Spreadsheets. Account numbers. Transactions.

Millions of dollars. Moving between shell companies. Offshore accounts.

The country club was a front. For what, I didn't know yet.

But I was going to find out.

---

I closed the laptop. Stared at the wall.

My in-laws were murderers. My husband's family. The people who'd welcomed me into their home.

And my daughter had stumbled onto their secret.

Now I had the evidence. But I didn't know what to do with it.

Go to the police? The Hartleys had friends everywhere. Cops. Lawyers. Judges.

Go to the media? Maybe. But that could put Lily in danger.

Run? Where? They'd find us.

I thought about Emily Morrison. Fourteen years old. Dead because she'd overheard something she shouldn't have.

I thought about my daughter. Nine years old. Tortured because she'd picked up a memory card.

I thought about Eleanor. Standing there with the power switch. Watching Lily scream.

I made a decision.

I wasn't going to run. I wasn't going to hide.

I was going to fight.

---

I called the only person I could trust.

My sister. Hannah. A lawyer in the city. The only person in my family who'd never liked the Hartleys.

"Charlotte? It's midnight. What's wrong?"

"I need your help."

"What happened?"

"It's a long story. But I need you to meet me. Tomorrow. Somewhere safe."

"Charlotte—"

"Please. It's about the Hartleys. And it's bad. Really bad."

A pause. Then: "Where?"

"The diner on Fifth Street. Noon."

"I'll be there."

I hung up. Looked at Lily. Still sleeping. Still innocent.

I'd protect her. Whatever it took.

Even if it meant destroying the Hartley family.

Even if it meant destroying my own.
