Chapter 4 - THREE TAPS

The next morning, I arrived at my office early.

Something was wrong. I could feel it the moment I walked through the door. A pressure in the air. A stillness that shouldn't have been there.

I sat at my desk. Tried to work. Couldn't focus.

Then I heard it.

Three taps. Pause. Three taps. Pause.

Coming from behind the wall.

I stood up. My heart was pounding. The sound was rhythmic. Deliberate.

SOS.

I moved toward the wall. Pressed my palm flat against the surface.

Cold. Colder than it should have been.

The tapping stopped.

I waited. Held my breath.

Then it started again. But not from the wall.

From behind the clock.

An old wall clock. Brown wood. Brass hands. Hanging slightly crooked on the wall behind my desk.

I'd never really looked at it before. It had been there when I moved in. Left by the previous tenant.

I reached up. Lifted it off the hook.

Behind the clock was a hole. Small. Dark. Just big enough for a finger.

May you like

I peered inside.

An eye was staring back at me.
