Chapter 10 - The Real Inheritance

Victor Crane was waiting beneath the bank.
Not in an office.
In a vault.
He was seventy-three.
Thin.
Elegant.
Very much alive.
Amara walked in alone.
At least, Crane believed she had.
Ruiz and his team were moving through the service corridor one level above.
Crane smiled.
“You look like Adrian.”
Amara stopped.
“Don’t.”
“He had your eyes.”
“You killed him?”
“No.”
She almost laughed.
“Everyone in this family says no before admitting something worse.”
Crane smiled.
“Good. You learn quickly.”
“Where are Julian and Eleanor?”
“Alive.”
“Celeste?”
“Alive.”
“What do you want?”
“You.”
“I’m standing here.”
“Not your body.”
He placed a document on the table.
“Your consent.”
“To what?”
“Release the Continuity Trust.”
Amara looked at the number.
Her mouth went dry.
The trust did not hold $4.5 million.
It held assets worth more than six billion dollars.
Companies.
Land.
Political foundations.
International accounts.
Crane watched her reaction.
“The Geneva account Eleanor stole was pocket change.”
Amara looked up.
“And all of this belongs to me?”
“Legally.”
“Why?”
“Because Adrian designed it that way.”
“My father?”
“Yes.”
Crane leaned forward.
“But money was not the inheritance he wanted you to receive.”
Amara waited.
Crane opened another file.
Names.
Hundreds of them.
Judges.
Senators.
CEOs.
Federal officials.
“These are the people the Vale network owns.”
Amara felt sick.
“This is blackmail.”
“This is power.”
“No.”
Crane smiled.
“That is exactly what your father said.”
He slid over a pen.
“Sign.”
“No.”
Crane sighed.
A side door opened.
Julian was pushed inside.
Bruised.
But standing.
“Amara,” he whispered.
She looked at him.
Crane drew a gun.
“Sign.”
Julian shook his head.
“Don’t.”
Crane pointed the weapon at him.
“Last chance.”
Amara reached for the pen.
Then Julian smiled.
Crane frowned.
“What?”
Julian looked at Amara.
“You really thought I’d come all the way to Geneva without stealing something?”
He opened his hand.
A tiny flash drive.
Crane’s face changed.
Julian grinned.
“I copied the entire Vale network.”
An alarm screamed.
Every vault door began opening at once.
And somewhere above them, hundreds of confidential files started uploading to federal servers.
Crane fired.
But this time—
Amara was ready.
