Chapter 3 - The Pendant

The ambulance doors closed around Amara.
Agent Ruiz climbed in beside her.
“Hospital first.”
Amara held the pendant tightly.
“Open it.”
Ruiz stared at her.
“You were just shot.”
“And someone just tried to kill four people on a rooftop.”
“That doesn’t make opening mystery jewelry a medical priority.”
Amara looked at him.
“It does if another shooter follows us.”
Ruiz sighed.
Then took the pendant.
He found the seam.
Pressed.
Nothing.
Amara remembered the letter that had arrived with it.
No explanation.
Just one sentence.
Some things only open when they’re broken.
“The bullet,” she whispered.
“What?”
“It broke the lock.”
Ruiz twisted the damaged edge.
The pendant opened.
Inside was a tiny memory card.
Both of them stared.
“You have got to be kidding me,” Ruiz said.
Amara almost laughed.
Then the ambulance jerked violently.
The medic fell sideways.
Ruiz grabbed the wall.
“What happened?”
The driver shouted from the front.
“Car just cut us off!”
A black SUV slammed the rear quarter panel.
The ambulance swerved.
Amara cried out as pain tore through her chest.
Ruiz drew his weapon.
“Keep going!”
The SUV hit them again.
Then again.
The driver fought the wheel.
“They’re trying to force us off!”
Amara looked through the rear windows.
Another SUV appeared behind them.
Ruiz’s face hardened.
“This isn’t about Eleanor anymore.”
“No.”
Amara closed her fist around the memory card.
“It’s about this.”
The ambulance suddenly turned into an underground hospital entrance.
Security barriers dropped behind them.
The SUVs sped past.
Ruiz exhaled.
“Temporary problem solved.”
Amara shook her head.
“No.”
“What?”
“If they knew which ambulance I was in, they knew the federal extraction plan.”
Ruiz stared at her.
She continued:
“That means somebody inside your operation told them.”
The doors opened.
Doctors pulled the stretcher out.
Ruiz walked beside her.
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed immediately.
“What?”
Amara watched him.
Ruiz hung up slowly.
“The tactical team reached the sniper position.”
“And?”
“No shooter.”
Amara frowned.
“Then who fired?”
Ruiz looked at her.
“They found the rifle.”
“That’s good.”
“No.”
He swallowed.
“It belongs to the FBI.”
