Chapter 11 - Ryan Tried to Take Lily

The emergency hearing was scheduled for Monday.

It was Friday.

Three days suddenly felt like a lifetime.

My attorney, Rebecca Sloan, read Ryan's petition twice and then removed her glasses.

"He made a mistake."

"Only one?"

"He attached screenshots."

She turned the laptop toward me.

Ryan had submitted texts where I called Diane dangerous and said I would never let her near Lily again.

"How does that help us?"

"Look at the dates."

The messages were from July.

Months before the champagne bottle.

I remembered the conversation.

Lily had come home from Diane's crying because Diane made her eat dinner alone after she knocked over a glass of milk.

Ryan told me I was overreacting.

I had texted him later that night.

Your mother is dangerous around Lily when she's angry.

Ryan answered:

SHE'S OLD SCHOOL. THAT DOESN'T MAKE HER DANGEROUS.

Rebecca pointed at his reply.

"He just submitted evidence that you warned him."

For the first time in two days, I almost smiled.

Then my phone rang.

Lily's school.

I answered immediately.

The principal sounded breathless.

"Mrs. Walker, your husband is here."

I stood so fast my chair hit the wall.

"Do not release Lily to him."

"We haven't. But he's demanding access."

"I'm coming. Call the police."

Ryan wasn't supposed to know Lily had returned for only two hours to collect schoolwork and see her teacher.

Someone had told him.

When I reached the school, three police cars were outside.

Ryan stood in the front office arguing with Officer Morales.

"She's my daughter!"

Lily was nowhere in sight.

Good.

I walked in.

Ryan pointed at me.

"There she is. Ask her why she's hiding my child."

"Because she's afraid of you."

His face twisted.

"You've poisoned her."

"You did that yourself."

Officer Morales stepped between us.

"Mr. Walker, leave the property."

Ryan looked at me.

"You think you're winning?"

"This isn't a game."

"It is now."

He walked out.

That sentence stayed with me.

It is now.

The principal took me to a conference room where Lily sat with the school counselor.

She ran into my arms.

"Did Daddy come to take me to Grandma?"

My throat closed.

"Why would you think that?"

"Because that's what he does when Grandma says you're being mean."

I looked at the counselor.

She looked back at me with alarm.

"Lily," I said gently, "has Daddy ever picked you up from school and taken you to Grandma without telling me?"

She nodded.

"How many times?"

She held up both hands.

More than ten.

The counselor whispered, "We need to check the release logs."

The school pulled them.

Ryan had signed Lily out early seventeen times in eight months.

I had known about four.

Thirteen visits had been hidden from me.

Then the secretary found something worse.

On three of those days, Ryan hadn't signed Lily out.

Diane had.

"She wasn't authorized," I said.

The secretary looked sick.

"She was added to the system in February."

"By who?"

The secretary clicked into the record.

A scanned authorization form appeared.

At the bottom was my signature.

Except I had never signed it.

Rebecca leaned toward the screen.

"Print that."

The principal nodded.

Then the secretary whispered, "There's another emergency contact listed."

"Who?"

She turned the monitor toward me.

FRANK WALKER.

I stared.

"Frank has been gone for nine years."

The secretary swallowed.

"This contact was added three months ago."
