Chapter 14 - Ryan Had Done This Before

I called Claire from the parking lot.

She didn't speak for several seconds after I told her.

Then she said, "I knew those weren't mine."

Her voice broke on the last word.

Eight years earlier, during the custody fight over Ethan, police had found anxiety medication and sleeping pills inside Claire's center console.

The prescriptions belonged to someone else.

Claire insisted they had been planted.

Nobody believed her.

The incident didn't cost her custody permanently, but it delayed the case and forced supervised visitation for six weeks.

"Ryan testified that he saw me taking pills at a barbecue," she said.

"Was that true?"

"I took ibuprofen for a headache."

I closed my eyes.

Ryan hadn't merely covered for Diane.

He had actively helped her attack another mother.

I had slept beside this man for eleven years.

At 4:00 p.m., Rebecca filed an emergency request for temporary sole custody and supervised contact only.

At 4:18, Ryan called.

I let it go to voicemail.

"Megan, you're talking to people who hate my family. Matthew is a liar. Claire has wanted revenge for years. Dad abandoned us. You're collecting broken people and calling it evidence. Call me before this gets worse."

I saved the voicemail.

At 4:31, a second one came.

"I love Lily. I would never let anyone seriously hurt her."

Seriously.

That one word told the entire story.

Some pain counted.

Some didn't.

Some injuries were acceptable as long as the family remained intact.

At 5:02, Ryan left a third message.

"Mom wants to apologize."

I deleted nothing.

That evening, Lily asked if she could sleep with the lights on.

"Of course."

"Is Grandma in jail?"

"Right now, yes."

Diane had been taken back into custody after police reviewed the camera evidence from her house and allegations involving Noah.

"Will Daddy get her out?"

I sat beside Lily.

"Daddy doesn't control that."

She twisted the edge of the blanket.

"He always gets her out of trouble."

I felt cold again.

"What do you mean?"

Lily looked at me.

"At the cabin, Grandma said Daddy always fixes things."

"What things?"

"Bad things."

"Did she give an example?"

Lily nodded.

"She said he fixed the lady's car."

I didn't understand.

"What lady?"

"The lady who was mean to Grandma."

I called Claire immediately.

"Did anything happen to your car during the custody case?"

Claire went silent.

"Why?"

"Just answer me."

"My brakes failed."

My hand went numb around the phone.

"When?"

"A week after the pills were found."

"Was anyone hurt?"

"No. I hit a fence. The mechanic said a line had been damaged. Police called it wear."

I stared across Rachel's apartment at Lily coloring quietly.

"Claire, did Ryan have access to your car?"

"At Matthew's house, yes."

My phone buzzed with an incoming email from Matthew.

Subject: YOU NEED TO SEE THIS.

The attachment was an old photograph.

Ryan, younger by eight years, crouched beside Claire's car in Matthew's driveway.

The hood was up.

And he was holding a pair of pliers.
