Chapter 2 - The Boy Nobody Mentioned

The hospital doctor wanted a CT scan.
I wanted answers.
I got neither quickly.
Lily was taken down the hall with a nurse while I stood under fluorescent lights staring at the photograph on my phone.
The boy's bruise was old enough to have yellowed around the edges. Someone had taken the picture in a mirror. In the reflection, I could see part of an adult's arm.
A silver watch.
Ryan owned one just like it.
I called the unknown number.
A woman answered after the fourth ring.
"Is this Megan?"
"Who is this?"
Silence.
Then, "My name is Claire. Ethan is my son. Ryan is my ex-brother-in-law."
I leaned against the wall.
Ryan had one brother, Matthew. According to Ryan, Matthew had moved overseas after a family argument years ago. I had met him exactly once at our wedding.
"Why are you sending me pictures of your son?"
"Because I saw Diane being taken out of your party in handcuffs. Somebody posted it online before the police cars even left."
Her voice sharpened.
"And because eight years ago, I was the woman everyone called dramatic."
I gripped the phone harder.
Claire told me Ethan had been six when Diane began "correcting" him during visits. Pinching. Slapping. Locking him alone in a laundry room when he cried. Claire found bruises. Matthew insisted his mother was strict, not abusive.
It sounded so familiar I became nauseous.
"Where was Ryan?"
"Around."
"Around?"
"He knew."
The hallway suddenly felt too bright.
Claire continued. "The worst incident happened at Diane's house. Ethan spilled juice on a rug. Diane hit him with a wooden serving spoon until it broke. Matthew and Ryan were both there."
I put a hand over my mouth.
"Did you call the police?"
"I did."
"What happened?"
She laughed once, without humor.
"Everyone changed their story."
Diane said Ethan had fallen from a bike.
Matthew backed her.
Ryan told investigators he had arrived afterward.
Even Diane's neighbor claimed she heard nothing.
Without witnesses, the case stalled.
"I left Matthew three weeks later," Claire said. "He chose his mother."
"Where is Ethan now?"
"With me. Safe. But there's something you need to understand before Ryan reaches the hospital."
I glanced toward the elevators.
"What?"
"He doesn't believe he's protecting an abuser."
"He watched his mother hurt children."
"I know."
"Then what does he think he's doing?"
Claire hesitated.
"In that family, protecting Diane is the rule everything else is built around."
The elevator dinged.
Ryan stepped out.
He looked exhausted, angry, and completely certain he belonged there.
"Megan."
I ended the call.
He walked toward me.
"How is Lily?"
"You don't get to ask me that like you weren't part of this."
His face tightened.
"What are you talking about?"
I held up the phone.
The picture of Ethan filled the screen.
Ryan stopped walking.
For one second, every bit of anger left his face.
What replaced it was fear.
"Who sent you that?"
That was all I needed.
Not Who is that?
Not What happened?
Who sent you that?
"So you remember him."
Ryan looked over my shoulder toward Lily's room.
Then he lowered his voice.
"Megan, whatever Claire told you, you need to understand something."
"I'm listening."
His eyes met mine.
"Ethan wasn't the first child Mom hurt."
