Chapter 10 - THE FLASH DRIVE

Ben called Renee Calder before Ms. Harrow reached her car.

He did not touch the flash drive.

He did not let Ms. Harrow retrieve it herself.

By 7:30 the next morning, district IT staff and Principal Danner were standing in Room 3B while Renee opened the locked desk drawer.

The drive was taped underneath a plastic pencil tray.

“What are the recordings?” Renee asked.

Ms. Harrow sat at a student desk near the door.

“Conferences. Some classroom interactions.”

“You recorded children?”

“Audio. For my own notes.”

“Did parents know?”

“No.”

Danner muttered something under his breath.

Renee heard it.

“I agree.”

Ms. Harrow stared at the floor.

“I told myself it helped me remember exact wording.”

Ben, who had been invited as Clara’s parent but kept outside the evidence review itself, waited in the front office with Lauren.

Clara was in class.

She had insisted on going.

“I already missed art yesterday,” she said.

At 10:12, Renee called them in.

“There are forty-three audio files.”

Lauren’s face tightened.

“Forty-three?”

“Most appear to be short notes made after class. Eleven include student voices. We’re still reviewing.”

Ben frowned. “Anything about Clara?”

“Yes.”

Renee turned her legal pad around.

One file had been recorded the day Clara first announced her project topic.

Ms. Harrow’s voice said: “Clara Reed. Military father story. Watch for parent scripting. Child is quiet, tends to seek approval, may be vulnerable to feeding.”

Lauren’s chair scraped backward.

“She decided before Clara even wrote it.”

Renee nodded.

“That appears to be the case.”

Ben’s expression went blank.

This time Lauren recognized it before he spoke.

“Don’t do the quiet voice,” she said.

He stood anyway.

“I need air.”

Outside the office, he walked past the trophy case and stopped at a window overlooking the playground.

Children ran in crooked circles beneath a gray coastal sky.

Clara was sitting on a bench.

Alone.

Ben frowned.

She was supposed to be in class.

Then he saw another girl approach her.

Emily.

They spoke for a few seconds.

Emily handed Clara something.

A folded note.

Clara opened it.

Her face crumpled.

Ben was through the side door before he realized he had started moving.

“Clara?”

She looked up quickly and hid the note behind her leg.

“What is it?”

“Nothing.”

“Bug.”

She shook her head.

Emily whispered, “It’s from Mason.”

Ben held out his hand.

Clara did not give him the note.

Instead she said, “He says this is all my fault.”
