Chapter 5 - ROOM 3B WITHOUT HER

The news spread before the first bell.
Not the truth. News rarely waited for the truth.
By 8:10, one version said Ms. Harrow had been fired because Clara’s father was “some kind of general.” Another said a military dog had bitten someone in the office. A third said Clara had lied, been caught, and then brought soldiers to scare the school.
None of those things had happened.
Clara heard all three before she reached her desk.
A boy named Mason whispered, “Is your dad arresting Ms. Harrow?”
“My dad isn’t a cop.”
“Oh.”
Mason considered this.
“Can the dog arrest people?”
“No.”
“Can he bite criminals?”
Clara dropped her backpack under the desk. “Please stop.”
Mason’s face fell.
“Okay.”
A substitute teacher arrived carrying a stack of blank paper and the strained smile of a person who had been called at 7:22 in the morning.
Her name was Mrs. Patel.
She wrote it on the board and said, “We’re going to have a normal day.”
Every child in the room knew that was a lie.
At 9:35, Principal Danner entered with Lauren.
Clara sat up.
Her mother gave her a small nod.
Danner addressed the class.
“Yesterday, a student was asked to make a public apology related to a class project. That should not have happened.”
Whispers moved around the room.
Danner continued. “The school is reviewing the situation. No student is in trouble for talking honestly with their family about what they saw.”
A hand rose in the back.
It belonged to Emily Park, who almost never spoke loudly.
“Even if we recorded it?”
The room went silent.
Danner blinked.
“What do you mean?”
Emily reached slowly into the front pocket of her backpack and pulled out a small tablet.
“My mom says I’m not supposed to record people without asking.”
“That’s generally a good rule,” Danner said carefully.
“I was recording my presentation practice. I forgot to stop it.”
Clara’s heart began to pound.
Emily looked at her.
“I have the part where Ms. Harrow made you read the note.”
Lauren’s hand went to her mouth.
Danner crouched beside Emily’s desk.
“Do not play it for the class.”
“I already sent it to my mom.”
“That’s okay. I’d like your mom to contact me.”
Emily’s eyes filled.
“Am I in trouble?”
“No.”
Mrs. Patel gently moved closer.
Emily lowered her voice.
“There’s more.”
Clara stared at her.
“What more?”
Emily looked toward the classroom door, then back at Clara.

“After you left for lunch, Ms. Harrow said something about your dad.”
