Chapter 16 - WHAT WAS IN THE BAG

The room froze.

Mason whispered, “He found a bomb.”

“No,” Ben said immediately. “He did not.”

He shortened Scout’s leash and gave a neutral recall cue.

Scout returned to heel.

Ms. Harrow looked pale.

Ben frowned toward her bag.

“Do you have a training reward in there? Food? Another animal scent?”

She stared at the bag as if she had forgotten it existed.

Then she opened it slowly.

Inside was a zip-top bag containing a frayed piece of old canvas.

Ben recognized it before she explained.

“Dog tug?”

“My brother’s,” she said.

The room relaxed by degrees.

Ms. Harrow held up the faded training toy.

“He trained with a dog for a while. Not like Scout. Different program. I found this with my school project.”

Scout’s nose twitched.

Ben nodded. “Old dog odor, maybe food, maybe a lot of things. He was curious. That’s all.”

Mason looked crushed by the lack of explosion.

The presentation ended twenty minutes later.

Parents gathered coats. Children asked Ben questions. Scout accepted exactly seven head scratches before Ben called him back to work mode.

Ms. Harrow waited until the room had almost emptied.

Then she approached Clara.

In her hand was a clean sheet of white paper.

“I wrote something,” she said.

Clara looked at it but did not take it.

“What?”

“An apology.”

“You already said sorry.”

“I know. This one is for the class.”

Clara’s face changed.

Ms. Harrow continued. “I made you read a statement in front of everyone. I think I should correct it in front of everyone too.”

Ben looked at Danner.

The principal said, “The district has approved a written correction. Whether she reads it is up to Clara and her parents.”

Clara thought about the sticky note.

The heat in her face.

Twenty-two pairs of eyes.

Then she shook her head.

“No.”

Ms. Harrow looked surprised.

Clara said, “Send it to everybody’s parents. Don’t make the class sit there and watch another person be embarrassed.”

For a second, Ms. Harrow looked as if she might cry.

She nodded.

“Okay.”

Ben’s mouth twitched at one corner.

They were halfway to the parking lot when Danner called after them.

“Ben.”

He jogged closer, holding a district envelope.

“This came in during the presentation.”

Ben took it.

“What is it?”

Danner’s face was hard to read.

“The review findings.”

Lauren looked at the envelope.

“Already?”

“Preliminary.”

Ben opened it beneath the parking lot lights.

His eyes moved down the first page.

Then stopped.

“What?” Lauren asked.

He handed it to her.

The recommendation was not termination.
