Chapter 13 - The Kindness That Exposed Them

Lila held the photograph so tightly it bent.

"My mother knew before the accident."

Vale nodded.

"She worked payroll for a pediatric research subcontractor first."

Jonathan stared.

"Before Plant Seven."

"Yes."

"She discovered BM-01."

"Pieces of it."

Lila's voice sharpened.

"Stop saying pieces."

Vale looked at her.

"She discovered children were being profiled through routine clinics."

"And reported it?"

"She tried internally."

"To who?"

Vale looked at Richard's name on one memo.

Lila laughed.

"Of course."

Jonathan read another note.

ANNA HART - HIGH RISK EMPLOYEE.

TRANSFER TO PLANT SEVEN SUBCONTRACTOR.

He stopped.

"They moved her."

Claire's face went pale.

"From pediatrics to the plant."

Lila stared.

"Punishment?"

Vale said nothing.

Jonathan answered.

"Yes."

The plant leak came later.

Anna had been placed in the path of the very exposure model she challenged.

Lila sat on a box.

Her knees had stopped working.

Jonathan crouched near her.

"Lila."

"Don't."

He stopped.

She stared at the floor.

"I thought poverty happened to us."

Jonathan said nothing.

"Like weather."

Her voice shook.

"Mom got sick. Stepdad left. Shelter filled. Bad luck."

She looked up.

"Your family engineered half of it."

Jonathan's face tightened.

"Yes."

No defense.

That helped more than one would have.

Claire found the Hart surveillance timeline.

One date glowed.

The grocery store.

Jonathan helping Lila.

Eleven days later:

ANNA HART MEDICAL SUPPORT CANCELED.

Lila stopped.

"Eleven days."

Jonathan read.

"Because I met you."

Claire whispered, "Richard thought Anna had sent Lila to make contact."

Lila stood.

"So he punished her."

Richard's voice came from the basement stairs.

"I panicked."

Everyone turned.

Police behind him.

He had surrendered.

Lila walked straight to him.

"You canceled her care."

"Yes."

"After he bought us milk."

"Yes."

"You thought she sent me."

"Yes."

Lila's hands shook.

"You killed my mother."

Richard looked at her.

"No."

"You cut her treatment."

"Yes."

"She died."

"Not from the exposure."

Lila froze.

Jonathan stepped forward.

"What?"

Richard looked at Claire.

"Tell them."

Claire's face emptied.

"Richard."

Lila turned.

"Tell me what?"

Claire took out her phone.

An old audio file.

"Anna planned to meet a federal investigator the morning after she died."

Lila stopped breathing.

"Her death certificate says heart failure."

"I know."

"Then what are you saying?"

Claire pressed play.

Her own younger voice:

"Anna, don't take anything from the hospital tray until I get there."

Anna:

"Why?"

Claire:

"Because someone accessed your medication order."

The recording ended.

Lila stared.

Claire whispered:

May you like

"Anna was murdered."

CUT.
