Chapter 14 - Anna Hart's Last Night

Lila did not cry.
That frightened Jonathan more than if she had.
She stood very still.
"Who?"
Claire looked at Vale.
He shook his head.
"No."
"Who changed her medication?"
Vale said, "I did not."
Richard snapped, "You had access."
"So did hospital pharmacy."
Claire opened Anna's hospital access logs.
One executive badge.
William Mercer.
Used after William was already dead.
Jonathan stared.
"Who had his badge?"
Claire raised her hand slowly.
Lila backed away.
"You."
"Yes."
"You were there."
"Yes."
"You killed her."
"No."
Lila's voice rose.
"Then stop saying no and explain."
Claire swallowed.
"I went because I found the medication change."
"How?"
"A pharmacy compliance flag."
"And?"
"I used William's old badge because mine would notify Richard."
Richard stared.
"You thought I ordered it."
"Yes."
"Did I?"
Claire looked at him.
"I don't know."
"Convenient."
She ignored him.
"When I reached Anna's room, she was already unresponsive."
Lila's breathing came faster.
"Did you call anyone?"
"I called the code team."
"Then why didn't the chart say poisoning?"
Claire looked at Vale.
Everyone did.
Vale's face hardened.
"Because the medication was clinically plausible."
Jonathan stepped toward him.
"Meaning?"
"It could be documented as cardiac treatment."
"Who ordered it?"
Vale said nothing.
Jonathan grabbed his shirt.
Police moved.
Lila stopped them.
"Let him answer."
Jonathan released Vale.
Vale straightened his collar.
"William wrote contingency instructions before his death."
Jonathan's stomach turned.
"What instructions?"
Claire opened an old voicemail.
William Mercer.
Cold.
Clear.
"If Anna Hart ever talks, Richard handles it."
Richard closed his eyes.
Then a second man's voice answered.
"No. I will."
Jonathan knew the voice.
Vale.
Lila looked at him.
"You."
Vale's mouth tightened.
"William believed disclosure would destroy the company and collapse medical support for thousands."
"So you killed one woman."
"I adjusted a medication."
Lila slapped him.
Hard.
The crack filled the basement.
Vale touched his cheek.
Lila's hand shook.
"Say murdered."
He looked at her.
"I followed a contingency protocol."
She stepped closer.
"Say it."
Silence.
"You murdered my mother."
Vale looked away.
Police cuffed him.
Jonathan stood frozen.
His father had written the instruction.
Vale carried it out.
Richard had known enough to hide the aftermath.
Claire had preserved evidence but stayed silent.
Everyone had a piece.
Nobody had stopped it.
Then Claire opened Anna's final hospital voicemail archive.
One message unsent.
Recipient:
JONATHAN MERCER.
Lila stared.
Claire pressed play.
Anna's voice was weak.
"Jonathan, if you ever hear this, I need you to understand something."
A breath.
"The milk wasn't the first time one of us saved the other."
Jonathan closed his eyes.
Then Anna continued:
"And BM-17 wasn't the first program."
Lila's heart stopped.
May you like
"BM-01 was."
CUT.
