Chapter 15 - The Debt Lila Never Owed

Federal agents took over the South Side plant before sunrise.

BM-17 servers were imaged.

Archive B was sealed.

Vale was taken into custody.

Richard went with investigators voluntarily.

Claire surrendered her devices.

Jonathan stood in the old clinic hallway and watched strangers carry out boxes his family had hidden for years.

Lila sat on the floor beside a radiator that had not worked since 2009.

Neither spoke for a while.

Then Jonathan said, "I'm stepping down."

She looked at him.

"From the company?"

"Temporarily."

"Why?"

"Independent review."

"Good."

He almost smiled.

"You don't soften anything."

"My mother tried that. Look how well it worked."

He nodded.

Fair.

Weeks moved fast after that.

Brooks-Mercer announced an external investigation.

Not a company-selected panel.

Federal monitors.

Independent toxicologists.

Victim attorneys.

Jonathan ordered every BM-17 medical file released to affected families where legally possible.

A compensation fund was frozen into place before the board could argue.

Sam was screened.

So was Lila.

So was Jonathan.

No one promised clean results.

That mattered.

For once, nobody promised what they did not know.

Richard was charged with obstruction, fraud, and conspiracy-related offenses tied to surveillance and evidence destruction.

Vale faced homicide-related investigation and criminal charges connected to Anna's medication.

Claire entered a cooperation agreement.

She did not ask Jonathan for forgiveness.

He did not offer it.

William Mercer's portrait came down from the lobby.

Jonathan did that himself.

Three months later, Lila returned to the forty-first floor.

The receptionist from the first day looked up.

Then smiled nervously.

"He's expecting you."

"That is new."

Jonathan's office looked different.

His father's awards were gone.

So were half the photographs.

On the desk sat one small framed piece of notebook paper.

I owe Mr. Mercer for milk and food. I will pay him back when I grow up.

Lila placed twelve dollars beside it.

Jonathan stared.

"You're serious."

"A promise is a promise."

He pushed the money back.

"No."

She pushed it toward him.

"Yes."

"Lila."

"Jonathan."

He laughed.

It surprised both of them.

Then he opened a drawer.

Pulled out a sealed envelope recovered from Anna's storage locker.

"This was addressed to you."

Lila took it.

Her mother's handwriting.

Her fingers tightened.

She opened it.

Lila,

Jonathan Mercer may someday believe he saved my children.

Do not let him.

Lila looked up.

Jonathan frowned.

She read aloud.

"Years before you were born, I found Jonathan unconscious after the Mercer leak and called the ambulance that saved his life."

Jonathan sat very still.

Lila kept reading.

"If you ever meet him, remember this: neither family owes the other money."

Her eyes blurred.

She smiled anyway.

"Tell Jonathan the milk only made us even."

Jonathan looked away.

His jaw tightened.

Lila folded the letter carefully.

"So you owe me nothing."

He nodded.

"Apparently."

She pushed the twelve dollars toward him again.

"I'm still paying."

He laughed through a breath.

"Why?"

"Because ten-year-old me was stubborn."

"Still is."

Another sheet slipped from Anna's envelope.

Jonathan picked it up.

His smile disappeared.

"Lila."

She took it.

Anna's handwriting.

IF RICHARD IS EXPOSED, DO NOT ASSUME BM-17 WAS THE FIRST PROGRAM.

Below it:

BM-01 - CHILDREN.

Lila's hands went cold.

A second page.

Patient index.

The first line:

LILA HART - AGE 2.

She stared.

Then lower.

SAM HART - PRENATAL FLAG.

Her breath stopped.

Jonathan leaned closer.

One final note had been added in red ink.

TRANSFER TO MERCER PEDIATRIC STUDY IF FAMILY CONTACT OCCURS.

Lila looked up.

"Family contact."

Jonathan's face drained.

"Me."

The office phone rang.

No caller ID.

Jonathan answered.

A woman said:

"If Lila Hart is with you, do not let her leave the building."

Lila froze.

Jonathan's voice hardened.

"Who is this?"

The woman replied:

May you like

"The doctor who enrolled her in BM-01."

CUT.
