Chapter 1 - No Wedding

I raised one hand, and the string quartet stopped in the middle of a note.
Vanessa's smile stayed in place for half a second too long.
"Richard?" she said from the far end of the aisle.
I walked past the first row with Noah's hand locked around two of my fingers. Phones were already lifting. Guests leaned toward one another, but I did not give them time to build their own version of what was happening.
"Sit down," I said.
One hundred and forty people stared at me.
Vanessa took one careful step forward. "What are you doing?"
"Ending the ceremony."
A woman near the aisle gasped. Brent moved beside the floral arch, his face tightening as he reached toward the inside of his jacket.
Samuel came through the side door carrying the projector remote.
He did not ask whether I was sure.
That was one of the reasons I had trusted him for thirty-five years.
I took the remote from him and turned toward the screen behind the band.
"Richard," Vanessa said, lower now. "Don't humiliate yourself."
My thumb pressed the button.
Claire's face filled the screen.
The bruise beneath her makeup looked darker on twenty feet of white fabric.
The ballroom went dead quiet.
"Dad, if you're watching this, something happened before I could talk to you."
Vanessa's lips parted.
Brent turned and headed for a service door.
"Stop him," I said.
Two hotel security officers stepped across his path.
Brent shoved one of them in the chest. The second officer twisted Brent's arm behind him and pinned him against the wall.
"Get your hands off me!"
The video kept playing.
Vanessa's recorded voice rolled through the ballroom.
"Once Richard signs after the wedding, Claire can scream all she wants."
Someone near the back cursed under his breath.
Vanessa looked at the screen, then at me.
Her face changed.
Not guilt.
Calculation.
"Turn it off," she said.
I let it play.
Brent's recorded laugh came next.
"And the old man?"
"Richard wants to believe he's still young enough to be loved. Men like that are easy."
Three guests turned their phones directly toward Vanessa.
She ripped off her veil.
"That is edited."
"Is Claire's face edited too?"
The ballroom doors opened behind me.
Noah pulled free from my hand.
"Mommy!"
Claire stood there with Samuel beside her and a hotel security manager behind them. One cheek was red and swollen. A thin scratch ran from the corner of her mouth toward her jaw.
Noah ran into her legs.
Claire dropped to her knees and wrapped both arms around him.
Vanessa pointed at her.
"She attacked me first."
Claire did not even look up.
I walked toward Vanessa.
"Did you hit my daughter?"
"She grabbed my phone."
"Did you hit her?"
"She has been trying to destroy us from the beginning."
"That was not my question."
Brent twisted against the security officer.
"This whole thing is a setup. Rich people move money all the time. That's what holding companies are for."
Claire stood.
"You moved two-point-three million dollars through entities Dad never approved."
Vanessa laughed once.
It was a dry sound with no humor in it.
"And you know that how? Because you broke into private company records?"
Claire flinched.
I saw it.
So did Vanessa.
She stepped closer.
"Tell them, Claire. Tell everyone how you got the files."
"Back away from her," I said.
Vanessa stopped.
Then she reached into the folds of her dress and pulled out a slim folder.
Samuel moved beside me.
"Don't sign anything else today," he said quietly.
I barely heard him.
Vanessa opened the folder and held up three pages.
"Those transfers were authorized."
She handed them to me.
My name sat at the bottom of every page.
My signature.
My corporate authorization code.
My biometric approval stamp.
For one second, my fingers would not move.
Claire came closer.
"Dad, you didn't sign those."
"I know."
Vanessa's eyes stayed on mine.
"Do you?"
I flipped to the second page.
The approval time was 11:42 p.m. on a night I had been asleep in my own house.
The third page carried a digital signature certificate linked to my private device.
Only four people in the company knew that device existed.
I looked at Brent.
He stared at the floor.
I looked at Vanessa.
For the first time since I had walked into the ballroom, she seemed frightened.
Not of me.
Of someone else.
"Who gave you access?" I asked.
She glanced past my shoulder.
Samuel shifted behind me.
Claire's breathing stopped.
Vanessa slowly lifted one finger and pointed toward the people standing closest to me.
May you like
"Ask the man who gave it to me."
