Chapter 2 - The Other Richard

I grabbed Vanessa's wrist before her finger could settle on anyone.

"Name him."

She jerked free.

"Not here."

"You picked the room."

A police siren wailed somewhere outside the hotel, growing louder.

Brent stopped fighting security.

That scared me more than the siren.

"Dad," Claire said. "We need to freeze the accounts now."

I turned to Samuel. "Get Helen Cho on the phone."

He was already dialing.

Within four minutes, my chief financial officer was on a secure video call from her home office. I stood in the executive conference room with Claire, Samuel, my attorney Martin Kessler, and two hotel security officers outside the door.

Vanessa and Brent were in separate rooms downstairs waiting for police.

Helen's face filled my laptop.

"I need every outgoing transfer from Whitmore Family Capital frozen," I said. "Now."

Her fingers moved offscreen.

"Done."

"How much is missing?"

"I'm running the full chain."

Claire slid the USB toward the computer.

"Start with Cole Meridian, BRC Advisory, and Westlake Development Group."

Helen stopped typing.

"How do you know those names?"

"Because I have been watching them for six weeks."

I looked at my daughter.

"Six weeks?"

Her jaw tightened.

"You were getting married. Every time I tried to raise a concern about Vanessa, you shut me down."

That landed where it deserved to.

I said nothing.

Helen cleared her throat.

"I found the first path. Two-point-three million, total. But this is not a straight theft."

"Explain."

She shared her screen.

A web of transfers appeared.

Money had left one of my family investment companies, moved through three outside entities, then returned in pieces to vendors that did business with Whitmore Holdings.

Martin leaned toward the screen.

"That's layering."

Helen nodded.

"It looks like someone wanted the money to disappear, then reappear as legitimate revenue."

"Why?"

She clicked another window.

My name appeared beside a series of approvals.

"Because if regulators saw this without context, it would look like Richard authorized off-book payments and concealed them through shell companies."

Claire put both hands on the table.

"They weren't just stealing from him. They were building a fraud case against him."

My phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

I ignored it.

It vibrated again.

A text appeared.

STOP LOOKING.

No one in the room had my private number except family, senior executives, and Samuel.

I turned the screen facedown.

"Keep going."

Helen opened the transfer logs.

"There is a pattern. Every suspicious approval happened late Tuesday night."

Samuel frowned.

"Tuesday?"

My stomach pulled tight.

For nearly twenty years, Tuesday had been my dinner night with Samuel.

We ate at the same Italian place three blocks from headquarters. I usually left my office around seven and returned after ten to collect whatever I had forgotten.

Sometimes I left my computer unlocked because the executive floor was restricted.

"Pull physical access logs," I said.

Helen did.

Tuesday after Tuesday, my office badge showed me leaving.

No record of re-entry.

Yet my desktop authenticated transfers hours later.

Martin tapped the screen.

"Remote session?"

"Maybe."

Helen's face tightened.

"Richard, your approvals require two factors. Desktop certificate plus device confirmation."

I reached for my phone.

"This device?"

"No. Your registered private device ending in 1842."

My hand stopped.

"That is this phone."

Helen stared at her screen.

"No. This phone ends in 7719."

I pulled up the device information.

She was right.

I had changed phones eight months earlier after dropping the old one into a marina during a charity event. IT had migrated everything.

Or I thought they had.

"The old device was disabled," I said.

"It should have been."

Samuel leaned closer.

"Could someone have cloned it?"

Helen did not answer immediately.

Then my laptop chimed.

A new security alert appeared.

LOGIN SUCCESSFUL - R. WHITMORE PRIVATE DEVICE 1842.

Helen's face drained of color.

May you like

"Richard... according to the system, you have another phone."
