Chapter 12 - Margaret's Voice

Police dogs picked up a trail behind the house.

It ended at the road.

A car had been waiting.

Claire searched through an old jewelry case with shaking hands until she found a tiny brass key taped beneath the velvet lining.

"This is it."

"We don't have the box."

"Then we find Samuel."

The county alert went out before noon.

At 1:17, a highway camera caught Samuel's car heading north.

At 1:31, another camera caught it crossing two lanes at speed.

At 1:36, police found it in a ditch with the driver's door open.

No Samuel.

Blood on the steering wheel.

And Margaret's blue music box on the passenger floor.

Claire unlocked it inside the mobile command van while a detective recorded every movement.

The top played three broken notes, then stopped.

I had heard that tune a thousand times when Claire was a child.

Under the velvet tray was a slot no wider than my thumb.

Inside sat a memory card.

The detective copied it before anyone played the file.

Margaret appeared on a laptop screen.

She was sitting in my old study.

Alive.

Angry.

"Richard, I am recording this because Samuel thinks I am afraid of him. I am. But I am more afraid of what happens if I stay quiet."

Claire gripped my arm.

Margaret continued.

"He believes you stole Whitmore Holdings from him. He has been telling people for years that the company should have been half his. That is not true."

My throat closed.

Thirty years earlier, Samuel and I had started with one warehouse, three employees, and more debt than sense.

He had sold his ownership stake after a disastrous year.

We almost never spoke about it.

Margaret looked into the camera.

"I found documents showing Samuel has been asking questions about your medical records, succession rules, voting control, and emergency authority. He introduced Diane Mercer because he thought she would build the structure for him. When she refused, he destroyed her career."

Claire whispered, "Mom knew everything."

Not everything.

Margaret's eyes moved toward the door on the recording.

"I confronted Samuel today. He said I had no idea what Richard took from him. He said if I exposed him, he would make sure the board believed Richard had been moving money illegally for years."

The same frame Vanessa and Brent later built around me.

My hand tightened into a fist.

Margaret continued.

"But he is wrong about the original partnership. Richard did not steal anything. I found the contract Samuel signed. I hid it where he will never think to look."

A crash sounded offscreen.

Margaret turned.

The camera tilted.

Footsteps.

Then a man's voice.

Samuel.

"Margaret? Who are you talking to?"

May you like

The recording cut to black.
