Chapter 1 - The Report Before Her Birth

I had spent five years asking the wrong question.

Why had my family kept Lena away from me?

The investigator, Mara Vance, sat across from me in the library with the sealed report between her hands. The same room had once held Christmas parties, birthday cakes, and family portraits polished so carefully that none of the cracks showed.

Lena sat beside me, her knees tucked together, both hands wrapped around a mug she had not touched.

Claire stood near the windows under the watch of my bodyguard, Marcus Hale. She had stopped arguing twenty minutes earlier, when the police technician confirmed that the kitchen recording she tried to erase had been copied to three separate servers.

Mara broke the seal.

“Ethan,” she said, “before I read this, I need you to understand something. The DNA result is not the worst part.”

My mouth went dry. “Read it.”

She slid the first page toward me.

PATERNITY PROBABILITY: 99.9987%.

I stared at my name beneath it.

Lena whispered, “So I really am your daughter.”

I turned to her. “Yes.”

Her eyes filled immediately, but she did not cry. That hurt worse.

Mara lifted the second page.

“This test was performed six months before Lena was born.”

I looked up. “That’s impossible.”

“No,” Claire said quietly.

Every head in the room turned toward her.

I stood so fast my chair hit the floor.

“You knew?”

Claire’s face went pale. “I knew there was a test.”

“Six months before she was born?”

“It was prenatal.”

Lena’s fingers tightened around the mug.

I moved toward Claire, but Marcus stepped between us—not to protect her from me, but to remind me that rage would not help my daughter.

Mara placed the signed agreement on the table.

There were four names beneath it.

Claire Whitmore.

My mother, Evelyn Cole.

My older brother, Daniel Cole.

And Dr. Samuel Reeves, the family physician who had delivered nearly every child in our family for thirty years.

The agreement was titled PRIVATE SUCCESSION PROTECTION PLAN.

I laughed once because the words made no sense.

Then Mara read the first sentence aloud.

“In the event the unborn female child survives delivery, all parties agree that Ethan Cole must not be informed of paternity until the child reaches legal adulthood.”

Lena dropped the mug.

It shattered across the hardwood.

I barely heard it.

Because beneath that sentence was a second condition.

If I ever acknowledged Lena as my biological child, control of the Cole family trust would automatically shift away from Daniel.

And suddenly I understood.

They had not hidden my daughter because they were ashamed of her.

May you like

They had hidden her because she was worth more than all of them.
