Chapter 10 - What the DNA Really Said

The prenatal DNA report had a second attachment.
No one had shown it to us.
Mara obtained a copy from an archived medical server after sunrise.
The first page confirmed I was Lena’s father.
The second page contained a genetic comparison against another Cole family sample.
My father’s.
I read the result twice.
Lena shared a rare inherited marker with my father that Daniel did not have.
I looked at Mara. “What does that prove?”
“That Daniel is not your father’s biological son.”
The room went silent.
Rachel sat down.
I felt an old family story crack open in my head.
Daniel had always been Grandmother Cole’s favorite. He was the one groomed for leadership. The one my father defended even when Daniel failed.
But the trust required direct biological descent.
If Daniel was not my father’s biological son, he had never been eligible to control it at all.
Lena’s DNA did not merely move succession away from him.
It proved his control had been invalid for years.
“How much money did he manage through the trust?” I asked.
Mara checked her notes.
“Over three billion in assets across eleven years.”
Rachel whispered, “That’s why they were terrified.”
It was bigger than inheritance.
Every contract Daniel had signed as controlling trustee could now be challenged.
Every transfer examined.
Every hidden payment exposed.
My mother had not only protected Daniel’s future.
She had protected the lie of his identity.
The hotel phone rang.
Security downstairs.
A package had arrived for Lena.
No sender.
Police opened it in the lobby.
Inside was a child’s red sweater.
Lena recognized it immediately.
“I wore that when I was six.”
It had disappeared after one of the nights Claire locked her in the laundry room.
Pinned to the sweater was a handwritten note.
Ethan can have the truth, or he can have the girl.
Not both.
Then Detective Ruiz’s radio cracked.

A black SUV had just rammed the rear security barrier of the hotel.
