Chapter 16 - The Archive Fire

The first box ignited before we reached it.
Flame climbed old paper faster than I thought possible.
Agents dragged Thomas toward the exit while Marcus grabbed an extinguisher.
The sprinkler system did not activate.
Someone had disabled it.
Mara shouted, “The original trust ledger!”
I saw the red leather book on the far shelf.
Smoke filled the ceiling.
I ran for it.
Marcus yelled my name.
A shelf collapsed behind me.
I pulled the ledger free and turned.
The exit had disappeared behind smoke.
For one second, I thought of Lena at the hotel.
Not the trust.
Not the company.
Not Daniel.
Only Lena.
I dropped to the floor and crawled toward Marcus’s voice.
He found my arm and dragged me through the doorway seconds before part of the ceiling came down.
Outside, paramedics put oxygen on me.
Mara opened the ledger with gloved hands.
The first pages were scorched.
The middle survived.
There, in my father’s handwriting, was the private ownership agreement involving Victor Dane.
And a later amendment.
If a direct biological descendant of Edward Cole existed, voting control remained with that bloodline.
Lena was not merely entitled to inherit one day.
She made my line the controlling line immediately.
Thomas had tried to burn proof that could strip Daniel of power and expose decades of fraudulent trust administration.
Federal agents arrested him.
By morning, prosecutors had enough to freeze the trust, the holding companies, and Daniel’s personal accounts.
I returned to the hotel smelling like smoke.
Lena ran toward me, then stopped when she saw the bandage on my hand.
“You went into a fire?”
“Not my smartest decision.”
She threw her arms around me.
“Don’t do that again.”
“I’ll try.”
Rachel watched us from the doorway.
Then her phone buzzed.
She read the message and turned white.
“What?” I asked.
She handed me the screen.
It was from an unknown number.
A photograph of Lena sleeping in the hotel bed.
