Chapter 11 - The Fire

The sprinkler system had already activated.

Water hammered down over rows of storage shelves while staff rushed outside.

Firefighters arrived within minutes.

The damage was limited to one archive room.

The exact room holding seven years of paper invoices.

Claire stood beneath the awning across the street, furious.

“They knew what we were looking for.”

Adrian watched the building.

“Or guessed.”

“No. Raymond told us where to look. He wanted us to see the fire.”

“A message?”

“A cleanup.”

Dominic shook water from his coat.

“Police will call it arson.”

“Good.”

Claire’s phone rang.

Victor.

She answered immediately.

“Did you burn the files?”

He laughed softly.

“You really have changed.”

“You haven’t.”

“You always did jump too quickly from pattern to accusation.”

“And you always hid behind process.”

Victor’s voice cooled.

“Walk away.”

“No.”

“You lost your career last time.”

“I survived.”

“You lost your fiancé.”

“He did me a favor.”

“You nearly bankrupted your family.”

Claire’s jaw clenched.

Adrian looked at her.

Victor continued.

“Do you want to know what happens next?”

Claire said nothing.

“People stop believing you.”

“I’ve heard this speech.”

“No. This time Adrian stops believing you.”

The call ended.

Claire lowered the phone.

Adrian said, “I won’t.”

She looked at him.

“You don’t know that.”

“Yes, I do.”

“Why?”

“Because I checked your old case.”

Claire froze.

“When?”

“Last night.”

“You investigated me.”

“I verify people who can destroy my business.”

“And?”

“Your evidence was right.”

Claire stared.

Adrian continued.

“Victor’s firm settled quietly with two clients six months after you left. Confidential terms.”

Her throat tightened.

He handed her his phone.

A court docket.

Sealed settlement.

Halden Mercer.

The same clients Claire had flagged.

She felt anger, relief, and grief collide.

“I was right.”

“Yes.”

“I knew I was right.”

“I know.”

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then a firefighter approached.

“Mr. Vale?”

“Yes?”

“We found something in the archive room.”

He held up a heat-damaged metal case.

Inside was a stack of papers protected by fireproof sleeves.

Claire took the top one.

A handwritten reconciliation sheet.

At the bottom was Elena Ruiz’s signature.

And beside it, one sentence:

IF THIS IS FOUND, RAYMOND IS NOT ACTING ALONE.

Below that were initials.

V.S.

D.V.

And A.V.

Claire looked at Adrian.

May you like

His face hardened.

“Someone wanted my initials on that page.”
