Chapter 18 - The Accountant Who Came Back

Claire stared at the screen.

“No.”

Elena looked confused.

“What?”

“That account was opened using my identity.”

Adrian’s face hardened.

“Victor.”

Claire nodded slowly.

“He didn’t just frame me now.”

“He built the frame years ago,” Dominic said.

The account creation date was three weeks before Claire had been fired from Halden Mercer.

Victor had planned ahead.

If his network ever collapsed, Claire Bennett would look like the architect.

Claire felt strangely calm.

For years she had wondered why Victor had worked so hard to destroy her career.

Now she knew.

She had not merely found fraud.

She had become useful as a future scapegoat.

Adrian said, “We take everything to investigators.”

“Yes.”

“No hesitation?”

Claire looked at the balance.

Twenty-seven million dollars.

Enough to change her parents’ lives.

Enough to restore everything she had lost.

Enough to ruin her forever.

“No hesitation.”

The federal investigation moved fast after that.

Victor was arrested in New York three days later.

Raymond surrendered through an attorney.

Vivian entered a cooperation agreement and resigned from every family foundation.

Dominic was cleared.

Adrian’s companies survived, though not without scars.

The stolen funds were frozen.

Claire’s identity was formally documented as stolen and misused.

Halden Mercer issued a statement reopening her old case.

Two former partners resigned.

One month later, Claire stood outside Bellamy House holding a letter.

Adrian walked up.

“What is it?”

“A reinstatement offer.”

“From Halden Mercer?”

“Yes.”

“What did you say?”

“No.”

He smiled.

“Good.”

“You sound biased.”

“I am.”

She handed him another page.

A new business registration.

BENNETT FORENSIC ADVISORY LLC.

Adrian read it.

“You started your own firm.”

“Yes.”

“And your first client?”

She looked at him.

“You.”

He laughed.

“Expensive?”

“Very.”

“Worth it?”

“Usually.”

They walked inside.

Table eight was empty.

The old ledger sat on it.

Adrian had kept the page with the extra zero.

Claire touched it.

“One digit.”

“That’s all it took.”

“One digit and a bad liar.”

“Raymond was never that good.”

“He was good enough for a while.”

Adrian studied her.

“You know what everyone in this building calls you now?”

“I’m afraid to ask.”

“The waitress who found twenty-seven million dollars.”

Claire rolled her eyes.

“I found an extra zero.”

“Less dramatic.”

“More accurate.”

He smiled.

Then the front door opened.

A young woman stepped inside carrying a file box.

Elena Ruiz.

Alive.

Nervous.

But standing on her own.

Claire crossed the room and hugged her.

Adrian waited.

Elena handed Claire the box.

“What’s this?” Claire asked.

“The part Raymond never gave Victor.”

Claire looked down.

Inside were original ledgers.

Not copies.

Not scans.

Years of payments.

Names.

Companies.

Judges.

Executives.

Police officers.

Politicians.

Claire’s stomach tightened.

Adrian looked over her shoulder.

“That looks bad.”

Claire closed the lid.

“No.”

She looked at him.

“That looks billable.”

He laughed.

Then Elena reached into her coat.

“One more thing.”

She placed a sealed envelope on top of the box.

Written across the front were five words:

FOR CLAIRE BENNETT — FROM VICTOR.

Claire stared at it.

Adrian said, “You don’t have to open that.”

Claire picked it up.

“Yes, I do.”

She broke the seal.

Inside was one page.

One sentence.

You found the money, Claire. Now find out who taught me how to hide it.

Claire looked up.

The room suddenly felt colder.

Because beneath the sentence was a photograph.

Victor Sloan.

Thirty years younger.

May you like

Standing beside a man Claire recognized instantly.

Her father.
