Chapter 17 - Elena

If Elena left alive, the video was not proof of her death.

It was proof of staging.

Claire searched every record connected to 8:44.

Transit cameras.

Ride-share logs.

Parking receipts.

Nothing.

Then Maria called.

“I remembered something.”

Claire put her on speaker.

“Elena used a second name after our mother.”

“What name?”

“Marisol Vega.”

Adrian looked at Claire.

She searched.

One utility account in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Opened seventeen months ago.

Cash payments.

No social media.

No employer.

No driver’s license activity.

They called police.

By midnight, Wisconsin authorities had located the address.

At 1:18 a.m., Claire’s phone rang.

Dana.

“They found her.”

Claire stood.

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

Claire closed her eyes.

Adrian sat down hard.

Elena Ruiz had been alive for eighteen months.

Living under another name.

Protected by one person.

Raymond Keller.

That made no sense.

Until Elena explained.

Raymond had found out Victor planned to kill her.

So he staged the garage scene.

He drugged her lightly.

Moved her.

Then helped her disappear.

“Why would Raymond help her?” Claire asked.

Elena’s voice came through the video call.

“Because Raymond wasn’t stealing at first.”

Adrian frowned.

“What?”

“He was moving money for Vivian. Then Victor started taking more.”

Elena continued.

“When I discovered it, Raymond panicked. He knew Victor would eliminate me and blame Adrian.”

Claire asked, “Why didn’t you go to police?”

“Victor had a detective on payroll.”

“Why not come back later?”

“Because Raymond said Victor was watching my sister.”

Maria covered her mouth.

Elena looked at Adrian.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“For letting you take the blame.”

Adrian said nothing.

Elena continued.

“Raymond told me he would fix it.”

Claire felt the pattern closing.

“He didn’t.”

“No.”

“He joined Victor.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Elena’s expression hardened.

“Money.”

There it was.

Not loyalty.

Not fear.

Choice.

Elena leaned closer to the camera.

“But Raymond kept one thing from Victor.”

“What?”

“The master account.”

Claire’s pulse jumped.

“What master account?”

“All stolen funds eventually passed through one clearing account before being divided.”

Adrian asked, “Where?”

Elena gave them the bank.

Then the last four digits.

Claire searched the records.

The account was still active.

Current balance:

$27.4 million.
