Chapter 14 - The Woman at the Top

Claire replayed the video three times.
Adrian stood beside her.
He did not speak.
Dominic returned from the alley alone.
“I lost him.”
Then he saw Adrian’s face.
“What?”
Claire handed him the phone.
Dominic watched.
When Elena said their mother’s name, he sat down.
“No.”
Adrian remained standing.
Claire watched him carefully.
“You need to ask her.”
He looked at her.
“You think I can just walk into my mother’s house and ask if she built a theft network?”
“Yes.”
Dominic laughed bitterly.
“She’ll love Thanksgiving.”
They went at dawn.
Vivian opened the door herself.
Adrian placed the phone on her kitchen table.
She watched the video.
No denial.
No shock.
Just silence.
Claire felt cold.
Adrian said, “Tell me she was wrong.”
Vivian looked at him.
“She was not.”
Dominic stood.
“You framed Adrian?”
“No.”
“You let Victor?”
“I let him protect what your father built.”
Adrian’s voice was quiet.
“By stealing from me?”
“By moving money beyond your reach.”
“It was my company.”
“It was our family.”
Claire saw it then.
Not greed exactly.
Control.
Vivian believed ownership meant inheritance of authority.
“Why?” Claire asked.
Vivian looked at her.
“Because Adrian wanted legitimacy.”
Claire waited.
Vivian continued.
“He wanted clean books, clean banks, clean partners. He was willing to dismantle everything that made the family powerful.”
Adrian said, “I was trying to make it legal.”
“You were trying to make it weak.”
Dominic stared at her.
“So Victor stole millions because you told him to?”
“I told him to preserve reserves.”
“Raymond?”
“Raymond got greedy.”
“And Elena?” Claire asked.
Vivian finally looked away.
“I never ordered anyone harmed.”
“That’s not the same as stopping it.”
Vivian’s mouth tightened.
Claire stepped closer.
“Elena disappeared because she found your system.”
“I told Victor to handle the exposure.”
Adrian’s face changed.
“What does that mean?”
Vivian whispered, “I thought he would pay her.”
The room went silent.
Claire said, “And when she vanished?”
“I was told she ran.”
“Did you believe that?”
Vivian did not answer.
Adrian turned away from her.
Something in him had broken.
Then Vivian said, “There’s more.”
He stopped.
She opened a cabinet and removed a sealed envelope.
“Your father kept insurance.”
Inside was a handwritten list of accounts.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
At the bottom: VICTOR SLOAN — SUCCESSOR CONTROL.
Claire read the line twice.
Vivian said, “Victor was supposed to answer to me.”
Adrian looked at her.
“And now?”
May you like
Vivian’s voice shook for the first time.
“Now I think he’s been waiting for me to die.”
