Chapter 10 - Karen
Karen Whitfield called Maya again.
"I wanted to let you know," she said. "The custody hearing is next month. I'm going to win."
"I hope so."
"Thank you."
"How are the kids?"
"Confused. Angry. Sad." A pause. "They miss their dad."
Maya was quiet.
"He's not a bad person," Karen said. "He's just... broken. And I can't fix him."
"That's not your job."
"I know. It took me ten years to figure that out."
Maya thought about her own father. The way he'd tried to protect her. The way she'd pushed him away.
"I hope you find someone who treats you well," Maya said.
