Chapter 12 - The Truth

The documentary came out in September.

Maya hadn't known about it until it was released. A small production company had been working on a piece about workplace violence against service industry employees. They'd found the video. They'd reached out to her.

She'd agreed to an interview.

She'd thought it would be simple. Just talking. Just telling her story.

It was harder than she'd expected.

She sat in a studio and talked about the lobby. About the fall. About the kicks. About the aftermath.

She talked about the fear. The anger. The exhaustion.

She talked about the way strangers had offered to help—and the way the hotel had asked her to be quiet.

She didn't talk about Derek by name. She didn't need to.

The video went viral again.

The documentary changed things.

Not immediately. Not dramatically. But slowly, people started talking. Other hotel workers shared their stories. Other victims of workplace violence came forward.

Maya was asked to speak at a conference. Then another. She started a small nonprofit—just a website, a few resources, a community for people who'd been through what she'd been through.

She didn't know if it would help. But it felt like something.

Her father watched the documentary.

He called her afterward.

"I didn't know," he said.

"Know what?"

"All of it. The stuff about the hotel. The NDA. The way they tried to make you be quiet."

"It wasn't your fault."

"I know. But I should have been there."

"You were there."

"Not for all of it."

She closed her eyes.

"You were there when it mattered."

He was quiet.

"I'm proud of you," he said.

"I know, Dad."

May you like

"I love you."

"I love you too."
