Chapter 14 - The Lobby

Three months after the trial, Maya walked back into The Whitmore.

Not for work. Not for a meeting. Just to walk through. To see the lobby. To remember.

The chandelier was still there. The marble floor was still there. The place where she'd fallen was just a place now.

She stood in the middle of the lobby and breathed.

A guest approached the front desk. A family—two parents, two kids, a small dog on a leash.

Maya watched.

The front desk agent—a new hire, young, nervous—stepped forward.

"Welcome to The Whitmore," she said. "Just a reminder—our pet policy..."

The father nodded. He shortened the leash. He walked toward the side entrance.

Maya watched him go.

She thought about Derek Whitfield. She thought about the way he'd looked at her. The way he'd kicked her.

She thought about the way she'd gotten back up.

Her father was waiting outside.

"How was it?" he asked.

"Fine."

"Just fine?"

She looked at him.

"It's just a lobby," she said.

He nodded.

"Okay."

They walked to the car. He opened the door for her.

"I can do it myself," she said.

"I know."

She got in.

He drove her home.

FINAL SCENEMaya sat in her apartment, alone, looking out the window.

The city was quiet. The lights were on. The world was going about its business.

She thought about everything that had happened. The fall. The video. The trial. The aftermath.

She thought about her mother.

She thought about the words her mother had told her, long ago.

"The world will try to make you small. Don't let it."

She hadn't understood then. She understood now.

She stood up. She walked to the kitchen. She made herself a cup of tea.

She sat down at her table.

She drank the tea.

She didn't think about Derek. She didn't think about the hotel. She didn't think about anything except the taste of the tea, the warmth of the mug, the quiet of her own space.

She was okay.

She was home.
