Chapter 12 - The True Heir

Marcus couldn't move. His nervous system misfired wildly. He could only watch helplessly from the asphalt.

Eleanor reached a hand up, expecting Austin to help her.

Austin looked down at her. He pulled his foot back and kicked her brutally in the ribs.

Eleanor collapsed, gasping for air.

Austin crouched down next to Marcus. His face was entirely devoid of emotion.

"You didn't really think I was just a sad little stepson, did you?" Austin whispered.

The teenager began to hum. The exact same haunting melody Sarah had heard in the dark. The lullaby Marcus’s biological mother used to sing before the fire.

"She was my grandmother," Austin said, pointing at Eleanor. "She burned her alive. I just let you beat me down for years so I could get close enough to take everything."

Austin pulled the bulky audio recorder from his pocket. The red light was still blinking.

He dropped it onto Marcus's paralyzed chest.

The flashing lights of five squad cars washed over the driveway. Tires screeched to a halt. Officers spilled out, guns drawn.

Austin immediately dropped the taser. He forced tears into his eyes, his entire body trembling flawlessly.

"Help me!" Austin screamed at the cops. "My dad just tried to kill my grandmother!"

As the officers swarmed Marcus, Austin locked eyes with him. The teenager offered a chilling, victorious smile before Marcus's vision faded to black.
