Chapter 4 - The Wall Safe

Bail took six hours. Lack of direct DNA tied to the motel room gave his lawyers just enough leverage to get him out.
Marcus slammed his foot on the gas. He needed to get to Austin. He needed to know how the kid’s shirt ended up at a murder scene.
He threw the front door open. Silence greeted him.
"Sarah! Chloe!" he roared.
Nothing. The house was a ghost town. He sprinted down the hall to Eleanor's room.
He stopped in the doorway. The room was stripped bare. The bed, the dresser, the rugs. All gone. It looked like a model home waiting for a buyer.
Marcus dragged his hands down his face. His knuckles brushed the wall where Eleanor's heavy oak nightstand used to be.
A square panel hung open in the drywall. A hidden wall-safe.
He reached inside the cold metal box. His fingers brushed against something small and round.
He pulled it into the light. A single, unmarked blue pill.
Before he could process it, his cell phone vibrated violently against his hip. Restricted Number.
He swiped the screen. "Who is this?"
A woman’s voice whispered through the speaker. Raspy. Wet.

"Hello, my beautiful boy. I've waited thirty years to hear your voice."
