Chapter 5 - The Abandoned Clinic

The GPS coordinates from the burner phone led to the edge of the county. An abandoned medical clinic swallowed by overgrown weeds.
Marcus killed the headlights. He gripped a heavy tire iron in his right hand.
He kicked the shattered glass door open. The clinic hallway was pitch black. Dust danced in the pale moonlight filtering through broken windows.
"I'm here," Marcus called out. His voice echoed off the peeling walls.
Footsteps crunched on broken glass. Someone stepped out of the shadows at the end of the hall.
It wasn't an old woman.
Sarah stood under the flickering emergency light. Her hands gripped a heavy steel revolver. The barrel was pointed directly between Marcus's eyes.
"Sarah?" Marcus took a step forward. "Put the gun down."
She didn't lower the weapon. The silver locket resting against her collarbone caught the light. The exact same etched silver locket worn by the faceless woman in the bloody photograph.
Her hands shook violently. Tears streamed down her cheeks.
"I promised her I would do this if you ever came looking for the truth," Sarah sobbed.

She pulled the trigger.
